Overview
The Albert Cuyp Market is one of Europe's largest outdoor street markets, stretching about 600 meters along Albert Cuypstraat in the De Pijp neighborhood. Around 260 stalls sell everything from fresh stroopwafels and Dutch cheese to clothing, flowers, and household goods.
The market runs along a flat, paved street that was built for pedestrian traffic. The central aisle between stalls is wide enough for wheelchairs and mobility scooters to move through comfortably. Unlike many of Amsterdam's cobblestone streets, the market surface is smooth asphalt.
Getting There
- Metro: De Pijp (Line 52) is the fastest option from Amsterdam Centraal. Exit the station and walk south along Ferdinand Bolstraat for about 200 meters. The station has elevator access.
- Tram: Tram 4 stops directly at "Albert Cuypmarkt" on Van Woustraat. Trams 3 and 12 also serve the area via Ferdinand Bolstraat and Van Woustraat stops.
- Bus: Bus 356 stops at Van Woustraat near the market.
Wheelchair Accessibility
- The market street surface is flat asphalt, smooth enough for all wheelchair types.
- The main aisle between rows of stalls is wide, generally 3-4 meters across.
- Most stalls are at a height that allows wheelchair users to see and interact with vendors.
- Side streets connecting to the market are also paved and relatively flat.
Visit on a weekday morning for the most space. Saturdays are the busiest day, and the crowd can make wheelchair navigation more difficult, especially between 11:00am and 2:00pm.
Accessible Toilets
There is no public toilet at the market itself. The nearest accessible restroom is in Sarphatipark, located one block south of the market. It has a 0.50 EUR entry fee. Several cafes along Albert Cuypstraat and Ferdinand Bolstraat also have accessible restrooms for customers.
Tips for Visitors with Disabilities
- Arrive before 11:00am on weekdays for the best experience. Fewer crowds mean more room to maneuver and shorter waits at food stalls.
- The market is outdoors with no cover. Bring rain gear or a wheelchair rain cape if the forecast is uncertain.
- Many vendors accept card payments, but some smaller stalls are cash only. Carry some euros.
- Street performers and food vendors at the Ferdinand Bolstraat end of the market create bottlenecks. Enter from the Van Woustraat side for more space.
- The surrounding De Pijp neighborhood has many accessible cafes and restaurants along Ferdinand Bolstraat if you need a sit-down break.
