Overview
The Begijnhof is a peaceful medieval courtyard hidden behind the busy streets of central Amsterdam. Founded in the 14th century as a community for Beguines (religious laywomen), it is now a residential courtyard open to respectful visitors. The courtyard contains the oldest surviving wooden house in Amsterdam (dating to around 1528) and two small churches.
The courtyard grounds are flat and relatively compact. However, getting in can be the main challenge for wheelchair users. The historical entrance from Spui is through a narrow arched doorway that may not accommodate all wheelchairs. An alternative entrance on Gedempte Begijnensloot, on the eastern side, may be more accessible.
Getting There
- Tram: Trams 2, 11, 12 stop at Spui, directly adjacent to the Begijnhof entrance. All GVB trams have low-floor boarding.
- Metro: Amsterdam Centraal (all metro lines) is about a 15-minute roll south along Damrak, then through Kalverstraat. The route is flat and mostly paved.
- Walking from Dam Square: Head south along Kalverstraat (smooth paved pedestrian street) and turn right onto Begijnensteeg. The distance is about 400 meters.
Wheelchair Accessibility
- The courtyard grounds are flat, with a mix of brick and stone paving. Some areas may have slightly uneven surfaces.
- The Spui entrance involves a narrow, arched passageway. Measure your chair width before attempting this entrance. Note that the Spui entrance door may no longer be open to general visitors at all times.
- The Gedempte Begijnensloot entrance on the east side is an alternative. This approach comes from Kalverstraat via Begijnensteeg.
- The courtyard itself is compact enough to see everything without covering large distances.
- The two churches within the courtyard may have steps at their entrances and limited interior accessibility.
The Begijnhof is a residential area. Visits are only permitted during opening hours (8:00am-5:00pm). Large groups are not allowed, and visitors should keep noise to a minimum. Wheelchair access may require asking a resident or caretaker to open a particular gate.
Accessible Toilets
There are no public toilets inside the Begijnhof. The nearest accessible restrooms are at the Amsterdam Museum (entrance on Kalverstraat, about 100 meters away) or at De Bijenkorf department store on Dam Square (about 400 meters north).
Tips for Visitors with Disabilities
- Contact the Begijnhof in advance if you have specific accessibility concerns. Access arrangements may be possible with prior notice.
- Visit in the morning for a quieter experience. The courtyard can get busy with tour groups in the early afternoon.
- The courtyard is small and can be seen in 15-20 minutes, making it easy to combine with nearby attractions like Dam Square or the Bloemenmarkt.
- Wear comfortable clothing for the weather. The courtyard is open-air with no shelter from rain.
- If the entrance passage is too narrow for your wheelchair, you can still see the courtyard's exterior and the wooden houses from Begijnensteeg.
