Overview
The Bloemenmarkt is the world's only floating flower market. Located on the Singel canal between Koningsplein and Muntplein, the market sits on a row of houseboats that serve as flower stalls. Since 1862, vendors here have sold tulip bulbs, fresh flowers, seeds, and garden souvenirs. It stretches about 200 meters along the canal.
The walkway in front of the market stalls is flat, paved, and at street level. Most wheelchair users can move along the market without difficulty. However, some individual stalls are on the houseboats themselves and may have a small step or lip at the entrance. Many stalls display their products outside on the walkway, so you can browse and buy without entering the stall.
Getting There
- Tram: Trams 2, 11, and 12 stop at Koningsplein, at the west end of the market. Tram 24 stops at Muntplein, at the east end. All GVB trams have low-floor boarding and ramps.
- Metro: Amsterdam Centraal (all metro lines) is about 1 km north. Walk south along Damrak, through Dam Square, and continue along Rokin. The route is mostly flat with paved sidewalks.
- Walking from Museumplein: Follow Leidsestraat north. The market is about a 15-minute walk on flat, paved streets.
Wheelchair Accessibility
- The main walkway along the canal is flat and paved with smooth surfaces. Width is generally sufficient for a wheelchair to pass other pedestrians.
- Most stalls have their products displayed at the front, on the street-level walkway, making browsing accessible.
- Some stalls are entered by stepping onto the houseboat. These may have a small step (5-10 cm) or metal threshold. Not all stalls have ramps.
- The walkway can narrow when stall displays extend outward. During peak hours, the combination of displays and foot traffic may reduce available space.
Visit on a weekday morning for the most space. The market is busiest on Saturday afternoons and Sunday. During quieter times, vendors may be able to assist you or bring products to the walkway if you cannot access their stall.
Accessible Toilets
There are no public toilets at the Bloemenmarkt. The nearest accessible restroom is at the Kalvertoren shopping center (Kalverstraat 212-220), about 200 meters north. There is also an accessible toilet at the Flower Market Cafe at Singel 614 for customers.
Tips for Visitors with Disabilities
- The best items to buy (tulip bulbs, seeds, small souvenirs) are usually displayed at the front of stalls, within reach from the walkway. You rarely need to enter a stall.
- The Singel canal side of the walkway has no railing in some spots. Stay toward the stall side if you are concerned about the open canal edge.
- This is a short market. Even at a slow pace, you can see everything in 20-30 minutes.
- Combine with a visit to the nearby Begijnhof (about 200 meters north) or Dam Square (about 400 meters north) for a longer outing on flat ground.
- Most vendors accept card payments, but a few smaller stalls prefer cash. Carry some euros for small purchases.
