Overview
A canal cruise is one of the best ways to see Amsterdam from a different perspective. The city has over 100 km of canals lined with 17th-century houses, and a boat tour covers the highlights in about 75 minutes. However, wheelchair accessibility varies greatly between operators.
Important: Most canal cruise operators in Amsterdam are NOT wheelchair accessible. Boats typically require descending 3 or more steep steps to board, and gangways are narrow. If you use a wheelchair, Blue Boat Company is currently the only major operator with purpose-built wheelchair-accessible boats equipped with hydraulic lifts.
Blue Boat Company operates wheelchair-accessible boats from their pier at Stadhouderskade 501 (across from the Hard Rock Cafe). These boats have hydraulic lifts for boarding, so you can remain in your wheelchair. Advance reservation is required. A maximum of 3 wheelchairs can be accommodated per sailing.
Getting There
- Tram: Tram 1, 2, 5, or 12 to Leidseplein. The Blue Boat Company pier at Stadhouderskade 501 is a 5-minute roll from Leidseplein.
- Metro: Vijzelgracht station (Line 52) is about a 10-minute roll along flat streets.
- Accessible parking: Limited street parking near Stadhouderskade. The Q-Park Museumplein garage has accessible spaces and is a 10-minute roll away.
- Drop-off: There is a drop-off zone near the Blue Boat pier.
Wheelchair Accessibility
- Blue Boat Company has wheelchair-accessible boats with hydraulic lifts for boarding. You stay in your wheelchair during the cruise.
- Accessible sailing times: 10:30am, 12:00pm, 2:00pm, 3:30pm, and 5:00pm daily.
- Maximum 3 wheelchairs per sailing.
- Advance reservation is required. Call +31 20 679 1370 (weekdays) or email [email protected]. Inform them about wheelchair passengers when booking.
- Check in at the ticket counter at least 15 minutes before your departure time.
- Stromma boats are not wheelchair accessible. They require climbing 3 or more steps to board. If your wheelchair folds and you can transfer and climb steps, it may be possible, but this is not a practical option for most wheelchair users.
Book your accessible canal cruise as early as possible, especially during summer months (June through August) and holiday periods. The limited number of wheelchair spots per sailing means they fill up quickly.
Accessible Toilets
There are no accessible toilets on the boats. Use the restroom before boarding. The nearest accessible public toilet is at the Rijksmuseum (a 10-minute roll away) or at cafes near Leidseplein. Ask Blue Boat staff about the nearest accessible facility.
Tips for Visitors with Disabilities
- Call or email Blue Boat Company to reserve your wheelchair spot. Do not rely on walk-up availability.
- The cruise lasts about 75 minutes. There are no toilet facilities on board, so plan accordingly.
- The pier area at Stadhouderskade is flat and paved. No steps are needed to reach the boarding point from the street.
- Audio commentary is provided in multiple languages through headphones on the boat.
- The best views are from the side seats near windows. Staff can help position your wheelchair for optimal viewing.
