Fully Accessible

Overview

Museumplein is Amsterdam's cultural heart, a large open square bordered by three world-class museums: the Rijksmuseum to the north, the Van Gogh Museum and Stedelijk Museum to the east, and the Concertgebouw concert hall to the south. The square itself is free and open to the public, with paved pathways, a shallow reflecting pond, and grassy areas.

For wheelchair users, Museumplein is one of the most accessible public spaces in Amsterdam. The pathways are flat, wide, and paved with smooth surfaces. There are no steps, cobblestones, or elevation changes. It serves as an ideal starting point for visiting the surrounding museums, all of which have strong accessibility provisions.

Getting There

  • Tram: Trams 2 and 5 stop at "Rijksmuseum" on the north side of the square. Trams 3, 5, and 12 stop at "Van Baerlestraat" on the east side. All GVB trams have low-floor boarding and ramps.
  • Bus: Bus 197 (from Schiphol Airport) and bus 357 stop at Museumplein.
  • By car: Q-Park Museumplein is an underground parking garage beneath the square with several disability accessible parking spaces. Elevator access to street level.

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • All pathways across the square are flat and paved with smooth material. No cobblestones.
  • The square is wide open with no barriers, tight passages, or obstacles.
  • Curb cuts are present at all street crossings around the perimeter.
  • The underground Q-Park garage has accessible parking spaces and elevator access to the square.
  • All three museums on the square are fully wheelchair accessible with elevators, wheelchair loans, and accessible restrooms.

Museumplein is the best place in Amsterdam to visit multiple accessible museums in one day. The Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, and Stedelijk Museum are all within 200 meters of each other, connected by flat, paved paths. Plan to visit two museums in a full day, with a lunch break at the Museumplein cafe or in one of the museum restaurants.

Accessible Toilets

There are no standalone public toilets on the square itself. The Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, and Stedelijk Museum all have accessible restrooms for visitors with admission tickets. The Cobra Cafe on the southeast corner of the square has an accessible restroom for customers.

Tips for Visitors with Disabilities

  • The Rijksmuseum offers free wheelchair and mobility scooter loans. The Stedelijk Museum also loans wheelchairs and Alinkers (walking bikes) for free.
  • Disability accessible parking at Q-Park Museumplein is limited. Arrive early, especially on weekends and during school holidays.
  • Street performers and food stalls appear on the square during summer months and special events. They can create minor navigation detours but never block the main pathways.
  • The Concertgebouw, at the south end of the square, offers wheelchair-accessible seating for concerts. Book accessible seats directly through their website.
  • In winter, a temporary ice rink occupies part of the square. The paved pathways around the rink remain accessible.
