Mostly Accessible

Overview

NEMO Science Museum is housed in a distinctive green copper building shaped like a ship, near Amsterdam Centraal station. The museum has five floors of interactive science and technology exhibits, from chain reactions and DNA to energy and the universe. It is one of Amsterdam's most popular family attractions.

The building is modern and mostly wheelchair accessible. Elevators reach all floors, passageways are wide, and many exhibit worktables can be adjusted for wheelchair height. The museum has one wheelchair available to borrow (reserve by email in advance). Visitors needing assistance can bring a companion free of charge. The rooftop Energetica exhibition has limited accessibility.

Getting There

  • Walking from Centraal: Amsterdam Centraal station is a 15-minute roll along the flat Oosterdok waterfront. From the station's main exit (center side), turn left and follow signs to NEMO. The route is paved and level.
  • Metro: Amsterdam Centraal station (Lines 52, 53, 54) has elevator access. NEMO is a 15-minute roll from the station.
  • Bus: Bus 22 stops near NEMO. The bus uses low-floor vehicles.
  • Accessible parking: The P+R Oosterdok parking garage is under the museum and has accessible spaces.

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • Elevators provide access to all floors. Passageways throughout the building are wide enough for wheelchairs and mobility scooters.
  • Many interactive exhibits have height-adjustable worktables, making them usable from a seated position.
  • The museum has one wheelchair available for loan. Reserve it by emailing [email protected] before your visit.
  • Rollators and mobility scooters are welcome throughout the museum.
  • The Energetica exhibition on the rooftop terrace has limited wheelchair access. Ask staff about current conditions.

Download the eZwayZ app before your visit. It helps you navigate through the building and past exhibits, showing accessible routes and elevator locations. Weekday mornings (especially Tuesday and Wednesday) are the quietest times to visit.

Accessible Toilets

Accessible toilets are available on every floor except floor 3. All have grab rails, emergency cords, and enough space for a wheelchair. Locations are signed at elevator landings.

Tips for Visitors with Disabilities

  • One companion enters free for visitors who need assistance. Bring a valid disability ID.
  • The museum is usually closed on Mondays, but opens on Mondays during school holidays and some public holidays. Check the website before visiting.
  • Everyone age 4 and older pays the same price (21.50 EUR). There is no reduced rate, but the companion discount helps.
  • The route from Centraal station along Oosterdok is flat and paved, but exposed to wind. In bad weather, consider a taxi or bus instead.
  • The museum cafe on the ground floor has step-free access, movable chairs, and space between tables for wheelchairs.
