Partially Accessible

Overview

The Rembrandt House Museum is where the Dutch master painter lived and worked from 1639 to 1658. The museum has two distinct sections: the original 17th-century canal house and a modern wing added later. This matters for wheelchair users because the two parts have very different levels of accessibility.

The modern wing is fully accessible by elevator and contains temporary exhibition galleries, the museum shop, cloakroom, and toilets. The historic house, however, has many narrow and steep canal house stairs with no elevator. Wheelchair users can enjoy the modern wing exhibitions but cannot access the period rooms in Rembrandt's original house.

Getting There

  • Metro: Waterlooplein (Lines 51, 53, 54) is a 3-minute roll away. The station has elevator access to street level.
  • Tram: Tram 14 stops at Waterlooplein, about 100 meters from the museum. All GVB trams have low-floor boarding.
  • Bus: Routes 22 and 357 stop near Jodenbreestraat.
  • Accessible entrance: The main entrance on Jodenbreestraat is at street level.

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • The museum is partially accessible for wheelchair users.
  • An elevator in the modern wing serves all floors: entrance level, basement (shop and toilets), and floors 1-4 (temporary exhibitions and workshop rooms).
  • Rembrandt's historic house has no elevator. The original canal house stairs are steep and narrow, typical of 17th-century Amsterdam buildings.
  • Corridors and exhibition spaces in the modern wing are wide enough for wheelchairs and power chairs.

If seeing Rembrandt's period rooms is important to you, be aware these are only in the historic house section, which has no step-free access. The modern wing houses temporary exhibitions, the etching demonstration, and the workshop space.

Accessible Toilets

A wheelchair-accessible toilet is located in the modern wing basement level, reachable by elevator. The museum also has gender-inclusive, women's, and men's toilets on the same level.
