Overview
The Stedelijk Museum is Amsterdam's leading museum for modern and contemporary art and design, with works by Mondrian, Malevich, Warhol, Kusama, and many others. The building combines a historic 19th-century structure with a modern extension (nicknamed "the Bathtub" for its distinctive shape). Both parts are fully accessible.
Exhibition rooms are large and open, with plenty of space for wheelchair users to move comfortably. Elevators and platform lifts connect all levels. Wheelchairs, walkers, folding chairs, and even an Alinker (a walking bike) can be borrowed free of charge. Caregivers for disabled visitors enter free.
Getting There
- Metro: Vijzelgracht station (Line 52) is about an 8-minute roll on flat pavement. The station has elevator access.
- Tram: Tram 2 or 12 to Van Baerlestraat, or tram 3, 5, or 12 to Museumplein. Both stops are a 2-minute roll from the museum entrance.
- Accessible parking: Disability-accessible parking is available at the group entrance level on Paulus Potterstraat 13. Additional accessible spaces are in the Q-Park garage under Museumplein.
- Accessible entrance: The main entrance on Museumplein is step-free.
Wheelchair Accessibility
- The entire museum is step-free. Elevators and platform lifts connect all levels in both the historic building and the modern extension.
- Exhibition rooms are spacious with wide doorways. You can navigate the galleries independently in a wheelchair or mobility scooter.
- Free loans of wheelchairs, walkers, lightweight folding chairs, and an Alinker walking bike are available at the information desk. Reserve in advance by calling +31 (0)20 573 2911 or emailing [email protected].
- Assistance dogs are welcome throughout the museum.
The Stedelijk is open 365 days a year, including holidays. Weekday mornings are the quietest time to visit. The ground floor galleries near the entrance tend to be busiest.
Accessible Toilets
Wheelchair-accessible restrooms are located on multiple floors. They have grab rails, emergency cords, and adequate turning space. Ask at the information desk for the nearest location.
Tips for Visitors with Disabilities
- Caregivers for disabled visitors enter free of charge. No advance booking is needed for companion tickets.
- The museum has wide aisles in the shop and cafe, with movable seating and enough clearance for wheelchairs.
- Reserve mobility equipment (wheelchair, walker, Alinker) in advance to guarantee availability, especially on weekends.
- The temporary exhibitions on the upper floors can get crowded during opening weekends. Visit mid-week for a quieter experience.
- Combine your visit with the Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum, both within a 3-minute roll on Museumplein. All three museums are fully accessible.
