Overview
The Van Gogh Museum holds the world's largest collection of works by Vincent van Gogh, including "Sunflowers," "The Bedroom," and "Almond Blossom." The modern building is fully wheelchair accessible. Exhibition halls have wide doorways with no thresholds, and elevators connect every floor in both the main building and the exhibition wing.
Visitors with a disability receive priority entrance. The museum has six wheelchairs, twenty folding chairs, two wheeled walkers, and two walking canes available to borrow. To reserve equipment, email [email protected] before your visit. One companion per disabled visitor enters free of charge, and the companion also receives a free audio tour.
Getting There
- Metro: Vijzelgracht station (Line 52) is about an 8-minute roll on flat pavement. The station has elevator access.
- Tram: Tram 2 or 12 to Van Baerlestraat, or tram 3, 5, or 12 to Museumplein. Both stops are a 2-minute roll from the museum.
- Accessible parking: A pick-up/drop-off area is at Paulus Potterstraat 7. Accessible parking spaces are available in the Q-Park garage under Museumplein.
- Accessible entrance: Both the Museumplein entrance and the Paulus Potterstraat entrance are step-free.
Wheelchair Accessibility
- Both the main building and the exhibition wing are fully step-free with elevator access to all floors.
- Wheelchairs, walkers, and mobility scooters (up to 500 kg) are permitted throughout the museum.
- Gallery doorways are wide and threshold-free. Exhibition halls have plenty of turning space for wheelchairs.
- The museum provides a free accessibility floor plan showing entrances, exits, elevators, and accessible toilets. Pick one up at the information desk.
Friday evenings (open until 9:00pm) are less crowded than daytime visits. The ground floor galleries around the self-portraits tend to be the busiest spots. If you visit on a weekend, arrive right at 9:00am.
Accessible Toilets
Adapted toilets are on the ground floor of the museum. They have grab rails, emergency cords, and enough turning space for a wheelchair. Locations are marked on the free accessibility floor plan.
