Overview
Vondelpark is Amsterdam's largest and most popular park, stretching 47 hectares through the Oud-Zuid neighborhood. Entry is free and the park is open around the clock. The terrain is completely flat, and most main paths are paved, making it one of the most accessible parks in the city.
The park has several cafes, a playground, an open-air theater, and large open lawns. Entrances have no barriers or steps. Public toilets, including accessible ones, are located near the main cafes. The main challenge for wheelchair users is the shared path system. Cyclists use many of the same paths, so stay alert and keep to the right.
Getting There
- Tram: Tram 2 to Overtoom or Van Baerlestraat. Tram 1 to Eerste Constantijn Huygensstraat. All stops are adjacent to park entrances.
- Metro: Vijzelgracht station (Line 52) is about a 10-minute roll via Museumplein. The route is flat.
- Walking from Museumplein: The park's main entrance near Stadhouderskade is a 3-minute roll from the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum.
- Entrances: Multiple entrances along the park's perimeter are step-free with no gates or barriers. The main entrance is near the intersection of Stadhouderskade and Hobbemastraat.
Wheelchair Accessibility
- Main paths through the park are paved asphalt and smooth enough for all wheelchair types, including manual chairs.
- The terrain is completely flat with no hills or steep gradients.
- Some secondary paths and shortcuts use compacted gravel or packed earth. These may be difficult for manual wheelchair users after rain.
- Entrances are barrier-free with no steps, gates, or turnstiles.
- Benches with companion seating space are placed along the main paths.
Cyclists: Vondelpark has shared paths for pedestrians and cyclists. Bikes move quickly and quietly. Keep to the right side of the path, especially on the main east-west route. Weekends and sunny afternoons are busiest.
Accessible Toilets
Accessible public toilets are located near the main cafes in the park, including 't Blauwe Theehuis (the Blue Teahouse) in the center of the park and Vondelpark3 near the eastern entrance. These have grab rails and enough turning space for wheelchairs.
Tips for Visitors with Disabilities
- The park is best visited on weekday mornings when there are fewer cyclists and pedestrians.
- The paved main paths form a loop through the park. You can do a full circuit of about 3 km (1.9 miles) or take shorter routes.
- Cafe terraces within the park have movable outdoor seating. Most have accessible entrances.
- The open-air theater (Vondelpark Openluchttheater) holds free summer performances and has designated wheelchair seating. Check the schedule at openluchttheater.nl.
- If coming from the Museumplein area, note that the connecting paths near the museums use cobblestones. Use the paved cycle path along Paulus Potterstraat for a smoother route into the park.
