Why Rent in Amsterdam?
Renting mobility equipment locally can be easier and cheaper than bringing your own on the plane. You avoid airline damage risks, baggage fees, and the hassle of transporting heavy equipment through airports. Amsterdam has several established rental companies that deliver directly to your hotel.
Book Early
Mobility scooters should be reserved at least one month before arrival. Wheelchairs should be booked at least 7 working days in advance. During peak tourist season (April through September, especially during tulip season in April-May), equipment sells out quickly.

Choosing Equipment for Amsterdam
Amsterdam's streets present specific challenges. Choose your equipment accordingly:
- Cobblestones: Larger wheels handle cobblestones better. If renting a manual wheelchair, ask for a model with larger front casters (at least 8 inches / 20 cm). Small caster wheels get stuck in gaps between cobblestones.
- Canal bridges: Some bridges have steep inclines. Power wheelchairs and scooters handle these more easily than manual wheelchairs. If you use a manual chair, consider renting a power attachment (such as a FreeWheel or similar front-wheel add-on) that lifts the front casters off the ground.
- Narrow sidewalks: Standard-width wheelchairs (about 60-65 cm wide) fit most Amsterdam sidewalks. Wider power chairs or scooters may need to use the road in some spots.
- Battery life: Cobblestones drain batteries faster. If renting an electric wheelchair or scooter, ask about the battery range and plan for shorter distances than the manufacturer's stated range.
Test On Delivery
When the equipment arrives, test everything before the delivery person leaves. Check the brakes, wheels, battery charge (for electric models), and overall condition. Take the chair or scooter outside and try it on the street surface near your hotel. Report any issues immediately.
Delivery and Pickup
Most Amsterdam rental companies deliver directly to your hotel or apartment. Delivery fees vary:
- Hotel delivery within Amsterdam: Typically included in the rental price or costs 15-30 euros.
- Airport delivery (Schiphol): Available from some companies for an extra 30-60 euros each way.
- Return: Most companies pick up the equipment from your hotel at the end of your rental period. Coordinate the pickup time in advance, especially if your checkout is early morning.
Insurance and Deposits
- Deposit: Expect a refundable deposit of 100-500 euros depending on the equipment value. Usually taken as a credit card authorization (not charged unless there is damage).
- Insurance: Some companies include basic damage insurance. Others offer it as an add-on for 5-15 euros per day.
- Theft: Most rental insurance does not cover theft. Check whether your travel insurance covers rented medical equipment.
- Your responsibility: You are responsible for the equipment during the rental period. If it is stolen or damaged beyond normal wear, you may be charged up to the full value.
Free Wheelchairs at Museums
If you only need a wheelchair for visiting museums, several Amsterdam museums lend wheelchairs for free:
- Rijksmuseum - Wheelchairs, rollators, and walking canes at the information desk.
- Van Gogh Museum - Six wheelchairs and other mobility aids at the entrance.
- Stedelijk Museum - Wheelchairs, folding chairs, and Alinkers. Can be reserved in advance.
These are first-come, first-served (except Stedelijk reservations) and cannot be taken outside the museum. They are a useful option for single visits but not a substitute for a rental if you need mobility support throughout your trip.
