Why Connectivity Matters

Reliable mobile data is especially important for wheelchair users in Amsterdam. You will need it for navigation apps (Google Maps, Apple Maps) to find accessible routes, real-time public transport information (GVB app), locating nearby accessible toilets (HogeNood app), ride-hailing services (Uber), and translating signs or menus with your phone camera.

Dutch Mobile Networks

The Netherlands has three major mobile network operators, all with strong coverage in Amsterdam and across the country:

  • KPN - The largest and oldest Dutch network. Best overall coverage, including rural areas.
  • Vodafone Netherlands - Strong urban coverage and fast data speeds.
  • Odido (formerly T-Mobile Netherlands and Tele2) - Good value plans with solid Amsterdam coverage.

All three networks offer 4G and 5G coverage throughout Amsterdam. For tourist stays, any of these networks will work well in the city.

Prepaid SIM Cards

Prepaid SIM cards are available without a contract and work in any unlocked phone. Prices start from around 5 to 10 euros for a basic SIM with data.

Where to Buy

  • Schiphol Airport - KPN, Vodafone, and Odido all have kiosks or shops at Schiphol. You can buy a SIM card immediately after clearing customs.
  • City center stores - Each network has branded shops in central Amsterdam. KPN and Vodafone stores are on Kalverstraat and other shopping streets.
  • Supermarkets and convenience stores - Albert Heijn, HEMA, Primera, and MediaMarkt sell prepaid SIM cards from all major networks.
  • Lebara - A budget-friendly option popular with tourists. Available at grocery stores, gas stations, and convenience stores. Lebara SIM cards cost 5, 10, or 20 euros. Good for data and affordable international calls.

EU Roaming

Any SIM card or eSIM purchased in the Netherlands works across 30+ EU/EEA countries at no extra charge. Data, calls, and texts function the same as in the Netherlands. This is useful if your trip includes Belgium, Germany, France, or other nearby countries.

eSIM Options

If your phone supports eSIM (most phones from 2020 onward), you can set up a Dutch data plan before you leave home. No physical SIM card needed. Just scan a QR code and activate.

Popular eSIM Providers

Download and activate your eSIM while you still have WiFi at home. This way you are connected the moment you land at Schiphol. Most eSIM apps let you purchase and install the profile in advance and activate it when you arrive.

Free WiFi

Schiphol Airport

Schiphol offers free WiFi throughout the terminal. Connect to the "KPN Schiphol" network. No registration is required for the first 4 hours. After that, you can reconnect. The signal is strong in most areas of the terminal.

In the City

  • Hotels - Nearly all Amsterdam hotels offer free WiFi for guests.
  • Cafes and restaurants - Most cafes (especially chains like Starbucks and Coffee Company) offer free WiFi. Ask staff for the password.
  • Libraries - The Openbare Bibliotheek Amsterdam (OBA) central library near Centraal Station has free WiFi and is wheelchair accessible with elevators to all floors.
  • Museums - Many museums offer free WiFi inside, though the signal can be weak in historic buildings with thick walls.

Accessibility Apps to Download

Install these apps before your trip so they are ready when you arrive:

  • GVB - Official Amsterdam public transport app. Real-time departures, route planning, and mobile ticketing.
  • 9292 - Netherlands-wide public transport planner. Shows accessible routes and station features.
  • HogeNood - Dutch app for finding public toilets, including accessibility information.
  • Wheelmap - Community-sourced accessibility map. Shows wheelchair access ratings for thousands of Amsterdam locations.
  • Google Maps - Useful for wheelchair-accessible routing. Enable "wheelchair accessible" in route options.
