Booking PRM Assistance
PRM stands for "Person with Reduced Mobility." Schiphol Airport provides free assistance through your airline. Request this when you book your ticket, or at least 48 hours before departure.
To book assistance:
- Contact your airline directly when booking. Specify the type of help you need: wheelchair to the gate, boarding assistance, or a meet-and-greet at arrival.
- Confirm the request 48 hours before your flight if you did not include it in your original booking.
- Arrive at the airport at least 2 hours before departure (3 hours for intercontinental flights).
- Go to the PRM meeting point in your departure hall. Staff will meet you with a wheelchair and escort you through security, passport control, and to your gate.
Self-Driving Wheelchairs
Schiphol has introduced autonomous self-driving wheelchairs made by WHILL. These can bring you to your gate without waiting for a staff escort. The service is free and does not require advance booking. Ask at the PRM meeting point.
Terminal Layout
Schiphol uses a single-terminal design. All passengers enter through one main building, which splits into three departure halls. The halls are all connected, so you do not need to leave the building or take a shuttle to change halls.
- Departure Hall 1: Concourses B and C. Handles Schengen (European) flights.
- Departure Hall 2: Concourses D and E. Pier D is the largest, with two levels. Lower level serves non-Schengen destinations, upper level serves Schengen destinations.
- Departure Hall 3: Concourses F, G, and H/M. Handles non-Schengen flights and low-cost carriers.
All three departure halls have elevators, escalators, and moving walkways. Distances between gates can be long, especially in Hall 3. If you have limited stamina, request a buggy or assistance in advance.
Wheelchairs at the Airport
Yellow loan wheelchairs are available throughout the airport with a 2 euro refundable deposit. Pickup locations include each departure hall, the Plaza train station area, the bus station, and Arrival Hall 3. You may take the wheelchair through security and leave it at your destination within the airport.
Accessible Toilets
Accessible toilets are available in all departure halls and in the arrivals area. They have grab bars, lowered sinks, and enough turning space for a standard wheelchair. Look for the international wheelchair symbol on signage.
Baggage Assistance
If you booked PRM assistance, staff will help you collect bags from the carousel and bring them to your transport. Oversized mobility equipment (electric wheelchairs, scooters) is returned at the oversized baggage counter near the carousels.
Getting to Amsterdam Centraal
Option 1: Train (Recommended)
The NS Sprinter train runs directly from Schiphol Airport station to Amsterdam Centraal. The journey takes about 15 minutes and trains depart every 10 to 15 minutes throughout the day.
Schiphol train station is located below the airport terminal at Schiphol Plaza. It has lifts, moving ramps, guiding lines, and braille signage to help you reach the platforms.
Wheelchair Users Need Ramp Assistance
A station employee must set up an accessible ramp for wheelchair users to board the train. Book NS Travel Assistance (reisassistentie) at least 1 hour before departure by calling +31 (0)30 235 7822 or through the NS app. Arrive at the platform at least 20 minutes early. See our Trains guide for full details.
A single ticket costs about 5 euros. You can pay with a contactless bank card or OV-chipkaart at the gates.
Option 2: Taxi
Taxis are available at the terminal exit. A taxi to Amsterdam city center costs 40 to 55 euros and takes 20 to 40 minutes depending on traffic. Standard taxis can fit a folding wheelchair in the trunk. For a ramp-equipped vehicle that allows you to ride in your wheelchair, pre-book a wheelchair taxi from Staxi or RolstoelTaxi Amsterdam. See our Taxis guide for contact details.
Option 3: Hotel Shuttle
Some Amsterdam hotels offer airport shuttle buses. Ask your hotel about accessibility before relying on this option, as many shuttle buses do not have wheelchair ramps.
Accessible Parking
Schiphol has accessible parking spaces in front of the departure halls and in all airport car parks. There is no extra charge for accessible spaces.
- Short stay: You can park for up to 1 hour in front of the departure halls with a visible disabled parking card (European Blue Badge) on your dashboard.
- Long stay (P3): Accessible spaces are located near lifts and entrances. A wheelchair-accessible shuttle bus runs between P3 and the terminal.
- Valet parking: Available at Departure Hall 2. Drive to the dedicated desk, hand over your keys, and staff will park for you. Contact +31 20 405 7900 at least 24 hours ahead if you need additional assistance.
Service Dogs
Service dogs and guide dogs are welcome in all airport areas and on all transit options. Carry your dog's documentation. Relief areas are located outside the terminal. Ask PRM staff for directions to the nearest one.
