Overview
The Byzantine and Christian Museum is one of the most important museums in the world for Byzantine art and culture. It is housed in the Villa Ilissia, a 19th-century building on Vasilissis Sofias Avenue, with modern underground exhibition galleries added during renovation. The collection spans from the 3rd century to the 20th century and includes icons, frescoes, sculptures, textiles, manuscripts, and objects from early Christian, Byzantine, and post-Byzantine periods.
For wheelchair users, the museum has been renovated with accessibility in mind. Elevators connect the exhibition levels, ramps provide step-free routes, and adapted restrooms are available. The underground galleries are spacious and modern. About 95% of the exhibition space can be reached without stairs.
Getting There
- Metro: Evangelismos station (Line 3, blue line) is about 200 meters west on Vasilissis Sofias Avenue. The station has elevator access. From the exit, head east along the avenue. The museum is on the right (south side).
- Bus: Several routes run along Vasilissis Sofias Avenue with stops near the museum. Most Athens buses are low-floor with ramps.
- Taxi: Drop-off on Vasilissis Sofias Avenue directly in front of the museum entrance.
- Driving: One designated disability parking space is available on the museum grounds.
Wheelchair Accessibility
- The main entrance from Vasilissis Sofias Avenue has level access. After entering, there is a short stretch (about 5 meters) of smooth cobblestones before you reach the courtyard.
- Ramps connect the courtyard level to the building entrances.
- Four elevators are positioned throughout the museum to provide access to the various exhibition levels, which are set at different underground depths. You will need to use different elevators to reach different sections.
- The underground exhibition galleries are modern, spacious, and well-lit with wide corridors and smooth floors.
- About 95% of the museum's exhibits can be viewed without using stairs. A small number of areas may require steps.
- The outdoor garden and courtyard contain archaeological finds and sculptures displayed at ground level. The garden paths are mostly flat.
- Display cases are set at heights that work for both standing and seated visitors.
- One disability parking space is available on site.
- Visitors with a certified disability enter free, along with one companion.
Accessible Toilets
Adapted restrooms are available inside the museum building. Note that the standard restrooms may have steps leading to them. Ask staff to direct you to the accessible restroom, which is located on the main exhibition level near the elevators.
Tips for Visitors with Disabilities
- The museum is less crowded than the Acropolis Museum and makes for a calm, comfortable visit. Weekday mornings are the quietest.
- The underground galleries stay cool even in summer, which is a welcome relief from the Athens heat.
- Navigation between different sections requires using four separate elevators, which can be confusing. Ask staff at the entrance for a map or directions to the accessible route through the galleries.
- The garden is a pleasant space with benches and shade, worth a stop before or after visiting the galleries.
- The museum is close to the National Garden (about 400 meters south), the Benaki Museum (about 300 meters west), and the War Museum (about 200 meters east). All are on or near Vasilissis Sofias Avenue, which has wide sidewalks.
- Free admission days include the first Sunday of each month from November through March, May 18 (International Museum Day), and October 28.
- Audio guides are available at the front desk. Ask about accessible formats.
