Partially Accessible

Overview

Monastiraki is one of the liveliest neighborhoods in central Athens, centered on Monastiraki Square at the intersection of Ermou Street and Athinas Street. The square sits between the Ancient Agora and Plaka, with direct views up to the Acropolis. It is known for its flea market, street food, the Tzistarakis Mosque (now part of the Museum of Greek Folk Art), and the remains of Hadrian's Library nearby.

For wheelchair users, the main square itself is flat and paved with smooth tiles. The pedestrianized Ermou Street running east toward Syntagma is wide and level. However, the side streets leading into the flea market area to the south are narrow, uneven, and often covered in rough cobblestones. Weekend crowds around the flea market can make navigation difficult.

Getting There

  • Metro: Monastiraki station (Lines 1 and 3) exits directly onto the square. Both exits have elevator access. This is one of the most central and well-connected stations in Athens.
  • Bus: Several routes stop on Athinas Street and Ermou Street near the square. Most Athens buses are low-floor with ramps.
  • Taxi: Drop-off is possible on Athinas Street at the north edge of the square or on Ermou Street to the east. The square itself is pedestrianized.
  • On foot from Syntagma: About 1.5 km west along Ermou Street. The entire route is flat, pedestrianized, and paved.

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • Monastiraki Square is flat and paved with smooth tiles. There are no steps or curbs across the main open area.
  • The square connects directly to Ermou Street (east, toward Syntagma) and Adrianou Street (south, along the Ancient Agora). Both are paved and relatively flat.
  • The flea market area south of the square (around Ifestou Street and Avyssinias Square) has narrow streets with uneven cobblestones, display tables spilling onto the sidewalk, and limited turning space. Manual wheelchair users will need a strong companion. Power wheelchair users should proceed with caution.
  • The Sunday flea market (8:00am to 3:00pm) draws large crowds and fills the streets with vendors, making wheelchair passage very difficult in the market zone.
  • Athinas Street, running north from the square toward Omonia, is a wide road with sidewalks. Sidewalks can be blocked by kiosks, parked motorcycles, and market stalls, especially near the Central Market.
  • Most restaurants and cafes on the square have outdoor seating at street level. Indoor areas may not be accessible.
  • Two free disability parking spaces are available at 86 Ermou Street and 133 Ermou Street.
  • The Tzistarakis Mosque on the square has steps at its entrance and is not wheelchair accessible inside.

Accessible Toilets

There are no dedicated public accessible restrooms on Monastiraki Square. The Monastiraki Metro station has restrooms inside the paid zone. Nearby cafes and restaurants may have restrooms, but most are not fully accessible. Ask staff before ordering if you need an accessible restroom.

Tips for Visitors with Disabilities

  • The best time to visit for wheelchair users is weekday mornings, when the streets are less crowded and vendors have not yet set up all their displays.
  • Avoid the Sunday flea market if you need wheelchair access through the side streets. The crowds and vendor stalls make the narrow streets nearly impassable.
  • Stick to the main square, Ermou Street, and Adrianou Street for the smoothest surfaces. These are the most wheelchair-friendly routes in the area.
  • Monastiraki is a great starting point for rolling along the pedestrianized Dionysiou Areopagitou walkway toward the Acropolis Museum. Head south from the square through Plaka or along Apostolou Pavlou Street.
  • Street food vendors on the square sell souvlaki and other snacks at counter height. Some have low counters or will hand food down.
  • The view of the Acropolis from the square, especially at sunset, is one of the best in Athens and requires no climbing or walking.
  • Disability discount cards are not needed here because the area is free, but carry yours for nearby paid sites like the Ancient Agora and Hadrian's Library.
