Overview
The National Garden is a 15.5-hectare public park in the center of Athens, directly behind the Greek Parliament building on Syntagma Square. It was created in 1838 as the Royal Garden and opened to the public in 1923. The park has over 500 species of plants and trees, a small zoo, a duck pond, a botanical museum, and the Zappeion exhibition hall at its southern end.
For wheelchair users, the main paths through the garden are paved and relatively flat. These paths connect the major entrances and pass the main landmarks. However, many secondary trails are narrow, unpaved dirt or gravel, and may have tree roots or uneven surfaces. Sticking to the main paths provides a pleasant and accessible route through the park.
Getting There
- Metro: Syntagma station (Lines 2 and 3) is about 200 meters from the main north entrance on Vasilissis Amalias Avenue. The station has elevator access. From the station, cross the square toward the Parliament building and continue past it to the park entrance.
- Bus: Routes 2, 4, 5, 11, and 15 stop on Vasilissis Amalias Avenue or Vasilissis Sofias Avenue near the park entrances.
- Taxi: Drop-off on Vasilissis Amalias Avenue near the main entrance, or on Vasilissis Olgas Avenue near the Zappeion entrance.
Wheelchair Accessibility
- The main north entrance (facing the Parliament on Vasilissis Amalias Avenue) is step-free. The gate is wide enough for wheelchairs.
- The south entrance near the Zappeion hall is also step-free and connects to paved paths.
- An entrance from Vasilissis Sofias Avenue (east side) provides another step-free option.
- Main paths through the park are paved with asphalt or stone and are about 2 to 3 meters wide. They are flat with only slight inclines.
- Secondary paths branching off the main routes are narrow (under 1 meter in places), unpaved dirt or gravel, and may have tree roots, fallen leaves, or muddy patches. These are not suitable for wheelchairs.
- The duck pond area is reachable via a main path and has a flat viewing area.
- The small zoo area has paved paths but some enclosures may have steps or barriers.
- The Zappeion hall at the south end of the garden has its own accessibility arrangements. The plaza in front of the Zappeion is paved and flat.
- Benches are plentiful along the main paths.
- Entry is free for everyone. No tickets are needed.
Accessible Toilets
Public restrooms are located in the park but their accessibility varies. The most reliable accessible restroom options are in the cafes near the Zappeion or at the Parliament end of the park. The park's own facilities may be basic or locked.
Tips for Visitors with Disabilities
- The garden is a welcome escape from the heat and noise of central Athens. The tree canopy provides shade even on the hottest summer days.
- Stick to the main paved paths for the best wheelchair experience. The secondary dirt trails are charming but not practical for wheels.
- The route from the north entrance (Parliament side) straight through to the Zappeion is about 600 meters on a paved path. This is the most accessible route.
- There are several cafes in and around the park. The Zappeion cafe and the Aigli cafe both have outdoor seating on flat surfaces.
- The park can feel isolated in some areas, especially on quiet weekday mornings. Stick to well-traveled paths if you are concerned about being far from help.
- Dogs are common in the park. Athens has a large population of well-managed stray dogs that are generally friendly but can be startling.
- Combine this visit with Syntagma Square (200 meters north) or the Temple of Olympian Zeus (200 meters south across Vasilissis Olgas Avenue).
- The park closes at sunset. Gates are locked, so plan your visit to exit before closing time.
