Overview
Syntagma Square (Constitution Square) is the central square of Athens and the heart of modern Greek public life. The Greek Parliament building (the Old Royal Palace) sits at the top of the square on its east side. In front of the Parliament stands the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, where the Evzones presidential guard perform the Changing of the Guard ceremony every hour.
The square itself is a flat, open, paved space that is one of the most accessible public areas in Athens. The Metro station beneath it is one of the best-equipped accessible stations in the city. The pedestrianized Ermou Street, Athens' main shopping road, begins at the western edge of the square and runs flat for about 1.5 km to Monastiraki.
Getting There
- Metro: Syntagma station (Lines 2 and 3) is directly beneath the square. It has elevator access from the platform to street level. The station also features an on-site archaeological display of finds from the Metro excavation, visible from the mezzanine level.
- Bus: Numerous routes stop on or around the square, including routes along Vasilissis Sofias Avenue, Vasilissis Amalias Avenue, and Panepistimiou Street. Most Athens buses are low-floor with ramps.
- Taxi: Taxis frequently pass the square. There is a taxi rank on the east side near the Parliament building.
- Airport Express: The X95 airport bus terminates at Syntagma Square. It is a low-floor bus with a ramp.
Wheelchair Accessibility
- The square is flat and paved with smooth stone tiles. There are no steps, curbs, or obstacles across the main open area.
- Dropped curbs provide step-free access from surrounding sidewalks onto the square.
- The Changing of the Guard ceremony takes place at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the base of the Parliament steps. You can watch the ceremony from the flat square below. There is no need to climb any steps to see the guards.
- The Sunday grand ceremony at 11:00am draws large crowds. Arrive 20 to 30 minutes early to secure a front-row position at wheelchair level.
- Ermou Street, the main pedestrian shopping street, begins at the northwest corner of the square. It is flat, wide, and fully pedestrianized with smooth paving. It runs about 1.5 km to Monastiraki Square.
- The Syntagma Metro station elevators are well-maintained and clearly signed. The station is one of the most accessible in the Athens Metro network.
- Sidewalks around the square on Vasilissis Sofias Avenue and Vasilissis Amalias Avenue are wide and mostly level, though some sections have parked motorcycles or kiosk obstacles.
- The lower terrace of the square (the section closer to Ermou Street) has a fountain and seating areas, all at the same flat level.
Accessible Toilets
There are no public restrooms on the square itself. The nearest accessible restroom options include the Syntagma Metro station (restrooms inside the paid zone) and nearby cafes and hotels. The Hotel Grande Bretagne on the north side of the square has publicly accessible restrooms on the lobby level.
Tips for Visitors with Disabilities
- Syntagma Square is the best starting point for exploring Athens. The Metro station connects to Lines 2 and 3, which reach most major attractions.
- The hourly Changing of the Guard is a short ceremony (about 5 minutes). The Sunday 11:00am grand ceremony with the full military band lasts about 15 minutes and is more elaborate.
- Ermou Street is the most wheelchair-friendly shopping area in Athens. It is flat, wide, and car-free. Major international retailers and Greek shops line both sides.
- The square has free public Wi-Fi in the immediate area.
- In summer, the square can be very hot because it is open and exposed. The National Garden (directly behind the Parliament building) offers shade and is only 200 meters from the square.
- Street vendors and performers sometimes set up on the square and can create obstacles. Navigate around them on the main paved areas.
- The area is well-policed and well-lit at night. It is one of the safest public spaces in Athens.
- Disability discount cards are not needed here because the square is free, but carry yours for nearby paid attractions.
