Fully Accessible

Overview

Aquarium Barcelona (L'Aquarium de Barcelona) is one of Europe's largest aquariums, located at the Port Vell waterfront. It houses over 11,000 animals from 450 species across 35 aquariums, including an 80-meter underwater tunnel through the Oceanarium, home to sharks, rays, and ocean sunfish. The building is modern and purpose-built, making it one of the most accessible attractions in Barcelona. The entire facility is step-free, with ramps, elevators, and wide pathways throughout. A reduced admission rate is available for visitors with disabilities.

Getting There

  • Metro: Drassanes station (L3, Green Line) is about a 10-minute roll from the aquarium. The station has elevator access. Walk along the Rambla de Mar pedestrian bridge to reach the Moll d'Espanya. Alternatively, Barceloneta station (L4) is a similar distance.
  • Bus: Routes 14, 59, 64, 120, D20, H16, and V17 stop near Port Vell.
  • Accessible parking: Designated parking spaces for people with reduced mobility are available near the aquarium entrance at Port Vell.

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • The entire aquarium is step-free from entrance to exit. The building was designed with accessibility as a priority.
  • Ramps and elevators provide access to all levels and exhibit areas.
  • The 80-meter underwater tunnel through the Oceanarium has a flat, moving walkway. Wheelchair users can ride the walkway or roll alongside it on the flat floor. The tunnel is wide enough for comfortable wheelchair passage.
  • Pathways throughout the aquarium are wide and follow a circular layout, making navigation straightforward.
  • The main pathway through all exhibits is approximately 1.5 kilometers long.
  • A limited number of wheelchairs and walking aids are available for loan. Inquire about availability when you arrive or call ahead.

The underwater tunnel is the highlight of the visit. Sharks, rays, and other large ocean species swim overhead and around you. The flat walkway makes this fully accessible for wheelchair users. Take your time here.

Accessible Toilets

Accessible toilets are available within the aquarium complex. They have grab rails, adequate turning space, and are well maintained. Staff can direct you to the nearest accessible facility.

Tips for Visitors with Disabilities

  • Reduced admission for visitors with disabilities: 19 EUR for adults, 13 EUR for children. Bring a disability card or certificate.
  • Last entry is one hour before closing time. Allow at least 90 minutes to 2 hours for a full visit.
  • The aquarium can be busy on weekends and holidays. Weekday mornings offer the most space for wheelchair navigation.
  • The Rambla de Mar pedestrian bridge connecting the mainland to the aquarium is flat and wide, fully accessible for wheelchairs. It does swing open occasionally for boats, which may cause brief waits.
  • The gift shop and cafe on site are step-free.
  • Tank viewing windows are at various heights. Most are accessible from a seated position, though a few elevated tanks are better viewed from standing height.
  • The interactive touch pools in the children's area (Planeta Aqua) are at a height that may be difficult to reach from a wheelchair. Staff can assist.
  • Port Vell is a pleasant waterfront area for a roll before or after your visit, with flat promenades and accessible restaurants nearby.
