Fully Accessible

Overview

The Fundacio Joan Miro is a museum dedicated to the work of Catalan artist Joan Miro, housed in a purpose-built rationalist building designed by architect Josep Lluis Sert on Montjuic hill. Opened in 1975, the museum holds over 14,000 works, including paintings, sculptures, textiles, and ceramics. The building was designed with accessibility in mind. A 30-meter ramp leads to the entrance with no steps or stairs, lifts connect all floors, and two wheelchairs are available for loan. The rooftop terrace, with its sculptures and views of Barcelona, is fully step-free.

Getting There

  • Funicular de Montjuic: Take Metro L2 or L3 to Paral-lel station (elevator access), then transfer to the Funicular de Montjuic (fully wheelchair accessible, included in metro ticket). From the funicular exit, follow signs to the museum, about a 5-minute roll on paved paths.
  • Bus: Route 150 from Placa d'Espanya stops near the museum. Accessible low-floor buses operate on this route.
  • Accessible parking: Two designated parking spaces for people with reduced mobility are located 35 meters from the main entrance.

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • The main entrance is reached via a 30-meter ramp with a 1:10 gradient. There are no steps or stairs. A wheelchair pusher is normally helpful due to the gradient but is not essential for powered wheelchair users.
  • If you are visiting alone and need assistance with the ramp, call the museum at +34 93 443 90 77 and a staff member will come to help.
  • Ground floor permanent collection rooms are mostly level with wide doorways.
  • A ramp with a 12% slope connects the ground floor to the first floor. This is steep and requires a wheelchair pusher for manual wheelchair users. Alternatively, the lift provides step-free access between all levels.
  • The basement level (Espai 13 exhibition space) is accessible by lift from the ground or first floor.
  • Two wheelchairs and mobile seats are available free of charge at the information desk.
  • The rooftop terrace is accessible by lift and features sculptures, seating, and views of Barcelona.

The heavy glass doors at the entrance can be difficult for independent wheelchair users to open. Staff are available to assist. Do not hesitate to call ahead or ask for help when you arrive.

Accessible Toilets

Accessible toilets are located on three levels: the ground floor (right side of the main corridor), the first floor (foyer before the library), and the basement (auditorium level). Note that the first floor Espai Taller toilet is not accessible. The ground floor toilet is the easiest to reach from the entrance.

Tips for Visitors with Disabilities

  • The museum shop, bookshop, and restaurant are all on the ground floor and fully accessible.
  • The library on the second floor may require staff assistance to access by lift. Call ahead if you wish to visit the library.
  • Plan about 90 minutes to 2 hours for the permanent collection. The building's natural light and open spaces make it a pleasant environment for extended visits.
  • The rooftop terrace is a highlight. It features large Miro sculptures and panoramic views. Accessible from the lift, it is one of the best outdoor spaces on Montjuic.
  • Combine your visit with MNAC or Montjuic Castle, both on Montjuic hill and reachable by accessible routes.
  • Weekday mornings offer the most space and quietest conditions for wheelchair users.
  • The museum gardens surrounding the building have paved paths and are worth exploring if you have time.
