Fully Accessible

Overview

The Hospital de Sant Pau (Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the largest Art Nouveau complexes in the world. Designed by architect Lluis Domenech i Montaner and built between 1901 and 1930, it served as a working hospital until 2009. After a major renovation, it reopened in 2014 as a cultural center and museum. The complex has no architectural barriers and is entirely accessible for wheelchair users, with lifts, ramps, spacious pavilions, and underground tunnels that are all step-free.

Getting There

  • Metro: Guinardo | Hospital de Sant Pau station (L4, Yellow Line) has elevator access and is about a 3-minute roll to the main entrance. Alternatively, Sant Pau | Dos de Maig station (L5, Blue Line) is also nearby.
  • Bus: Routes 19, 47, 117, and H8 stop near the complex.
  • Walking: From the Sagrada Familia (about 10 minutes on foot), walk northwest along Avinguda de Gaudi, a wide, tree-lined pedestrian boulevard with a direct view of the hospital's main facade. The path is flat and paved.

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • The entrance to the complex is fully wheelchair accessible with no steps or barriers.
  • The entire Modernist Precinct has no architectural barriers. All visitor spaces, both interior and exterior, are accessible.
  • Lifts serve the second level of the pavilions, so wheelchair users can access all exhibition areas.
  • The underground tunnels connecting the pavilions are completely step-free, with smooth floors and wide corridors.
  • Two loan wheelchairs are available free of charge at the entrance counter. First come, first served.
  • Rest areas with seating are provided in both interior and exterior spaces throughout the complex.

The complex is large and spread across multiple pavilions connected by underground tunnels. Allow at least 90 minutes for a full visit. The tunnels are cool and shaded, providing relief on hot days.

Accessible Toilets

Accessible toilets are located at multiple points throughout the visit route. Each has grab rails, adequate turning space, and is well maintained. Ask staff at the entrance for the nearest location.
