Overview
The Magic Fountain of Montjuic (Font Magica) is a large outdoor fountain at the base of Montjuic hill, built for the 1929 International Exposition. On show nights, it performs a choreographed display of water, colored light, and music that lasts about one hour with several short sequences. The entire viewing area is flat, open, and fully accessible for wheelchair users. There are no tickets or reservations needed. The fountain sits in Placa de Carles Buigas, a wide plaza with ramps and paved paths on all sides. This is one of Barcelona's most accessible attractions.
Getting There
- Metro: Espanya station (Lines L1 and L3) is approximately 400 meters from the fountain. The station has elevator access to street level. From the station exit, head south along Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina toward the Palau Nacional. The fountain is straight ahead.
- Bus: Routes 13, 23, 46, 65, and 150 stop near Placa d'Espanya.
- On foot: From Placa d'Espanya, walk south along Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina. The route is wide and flat. When you reach the stairs, turn right and follow the accessible path in front of the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion to reach the fountain level.
The Magic Fountain show is completely free. No tickets or reservations are needed. Arrive 15 to 20 minutes before the first show for the best viewing position. Check the official Barcelona city website for the current schedule, as show times change seasonally.
Wheelchair Accessibility
- The entire Placa de Carles Buigas area around the fountain is flat, open, and paved. There are no steps or curbs in the main viewing area.
- Wide ramps and accessible pathways connect the fountain plaza to the surrounding streets.
- Accessible viewing points are available around the full perimeter of the fountain at Placa de Carles Buigas. Flat areas are designated for visitors with mobility needs.
- The approach from Placa d'Espanya along Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina is wide and flat, though there are stairs partway up. The accessible route goes to the right, passing the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion.
- The ground surface is smooth paving throughout the plaza area.
Accessible Toilets
There are no permanent public restrooms at the fountain itself. The nearest accessible restrooms are in the CaixaForum museum (across the road) or in restaurants and cafes near Placa d'Espanya. Plan accordingly.
Tips for Visitors with Disabilities
- Arrive 15 to 20 minutes before the first show starts to secure a good viewing spot at fountain level. The front positions fill up quickly.
- The shows run multiple times per evening, each lasting about 15 minutes. You do not need to stay for the full hour.
- Show times change seasonally. In winter (November to February), shows start at 8:00pm. In summer (June to September), shows start at 9:00pm or 9:30pm. Always check the Barcelona city website on the day of your visit.
- The area is fully outdoors with no shelter. Bring warm clothing for winter evenings and rain gear if the forecast is uncertain.
- After the show, the Montjuic area has other accessible attractions nearby, including the CaixaForum museum and the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion, both at ground level.
- The Montjuic cable car and the castle at the top of the hill have limited wheelchair accessibility. The Magic Fountain area at the base is the most accessible part of Montjuic.
