Overview
MNAC (Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya) is Catalonia's national art museum, housed in the grand Palau Nacional on Montjuic hill. The collection spans over a thousand years of art, from Romanesque church murals to modern works. Despite the building's imposing exterior staircase, the museum is fully accessible for wheelchair users. Two ramps on either side of the front entrance bypass the stairs entirely, and lifts and stair-climbing platforms connect all exhibition floors inside.
Getting There
- Metro: Espanya station (L1, L3) has elevator access and is at the base of Montjuic. From the station, you can reach the museum by following Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina toward the Palau Nacional. The path is paved and mostly flat, though there is a gradual uphill slope.
- Bus: Route 150 stops near the museum entrance. The Montjuic tourist bus (Bus Turistic) also stops here.
- By car/coach: Paid municipal parking is available nearby with designated spaces for people with reduced mobility. Coaches carrying passengers with special needs can access the building through the rear office area by calling ahead at +34 93 622 03 75.
The grand staircase at the front of the Palau Nacional is not required for access. Two ramps on either side of the main entrance provide step-free entry directly into the museum lobby.
Wheelchair Accessibility
- Two ramps on either side of the main front door provide step-free access, bypassing the grand staircase entirely.
- Inside the museum, lifts and stair-climbing platforms connect all floors. Customer Service staff will guide you and activate the platforms as needed.
- A high-capacity lift is available for group visits with multiple wheelchair users, using alternative accessible routes.
- Lift buttons have Braille markings.
- Corridors and gallery spaces are wide and flat, allowing comfortable wheelchair navigation.
- Free wheelchair, pushchair, and folding chair loans are available at the cloakroom. First come, first served.
- The rear office entrance is at ground level and can be used as an alternative accessible entry by prior arrangement.
Accessible Toilets
Adapted toilets are located in three areas: the main foyer, the Sala Oval, and near the Library. Each has grab rails, emergency cords, and enough turning space for a standard wheelchair. The foyer toilet is the easiest to find from the main entrance.
Tips for Visitors with Disabilities
- Free admission for holders of the Disability Accreditation Card of the Generalitat de Catalunya. If you have a recognized third-person assistance marker, your companion also enters free.
- Free entry for everyone on Saturdays after 3:00pm and the first Sunday of each month.

- The rooftop terrace is accessible and provides some of the best views of the city, including the Magic Fountain and Placa d'Espanya.
- Seating benches are located throughout the foyer, collection rooms, and temporary exhibition spaces for rest breaks.
- Plan at least 2 to 3 hours for the main collection. The Romanesque murals on the upper floor are a highlight unique to this museum.
