Partially Accessible

Overview

Montjuic Castle (Castell de Montjuic) is an 18th-century military fortress perched on the summit of Montjuic hill, offering panoramic views over Barcelona, the port, and the Mediterranean. The castle has a complex history as both a defensive fort and a political prison. Today it functions as a museum and cultural space. The main courtyard is mostly step-free, and the castle is reachable by an accessible cable car. However, the historic fortress has uneven cobblestone surfaces on the ramparts and outer walkways that can be challenging for wheelchair users.

Getting There

  • Metro + Funicular + Cable Car: Take Metro Line 2 or 3 to Paral-lel station (elevators available). Transfer to the Montjuic Funicular (included in your metro ticket, fully wheelchair accessible). At the top of the funicular, transfer to the Teleferic de Montjuic cable car. The cable car stations have ramps, elevators, and staff assistance for wheelchair users. The cable car cabins are designed to accommodate wheelchairs.
  • Bus: Route 150 runs from Placa d'Espanya to the castle, with accessible low-floor buses.
  • Accessible parking: Designated parking spaces for people with reduced mobility are available near the castle entrance.

The accessible route to the castle is: Metro to Paral-lel, then Funicular de Montjuic, then Teleferic de Montjuic cable car. This entire route is step-free. The funicular is included in your metro ticket. The cable car requires a separate ticket.

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • The Teleferic de Montjuic cable car is fully wheelchair accessible with ramps, elevators at stations, and staff to assist with boarding.
  • The main courtyard of the castle is largely step-free with paved surfaces.
  • The castle entrance area and main exhibition spaces are accessible.
  • The ramparts (outer defensive walls) and some walkways have uneven cobblestone surfaces that are difficult for wheelchair users. These areas offer the best views but require careful navigation.
  • Some sections of the upper ramparts involve steps and are not accessible.
  • Wheelchair users are permitted throughout the castle where access is physically possible. The castle restricts other wheeled devices (bicycles, scooters) but explicitly allows mobility equipment.

The cobblestone surfaces on the ramparts are rough and uneven. Power wheelchair users will manage better than manual wheelchair users in these areas. Some of the best viewpoints can be reached from the main courtyard without venturing onto the cobblestones.

Accessible Toilets

Accessible toilets are available on site within the castle complex. They have grab rails and adequate turning space. Ask staff at the entrance for directions.
