Overview
Park Guell is a hillside public park designed by Antoni Gaudi, featuring colorful mosaic work, winding paths, and sweeping views of Barcelona. The Monumental Zone (the ticketed area with the famous dragon stairway and mosaic bench) has accessible routes with a lift. However, much of the park is built on a steep hillside with uneven paths, flights of steps, and significant inclines. An electric wheelchair or powered attachment is strongly recommended. Two wheelchairs are available for loan upon request. The Gaudi House Museum inside the park is not accessible due to stairs and narrow passages.
Getting There
- Bus: Lines 24, 92, and 119 stop near the Carretera del Carmel entrance, which is the most accessible entrance. Bus 24 runs from Placa de Catalunya.
- Metro: El Carmel station (L5) is the closest, but requires a 15 to 20 minute uphill walk to reach the park entrance. This route is steep and not recommended for manual wheelchair users.
- Taxi: A taxi directly to the Carretera del Carmel entrance is the easiest option for wheelchair users. Ask the driver for the upper (east side) entrance.
The walk from any Metro station to Park Guell is steep and long. A taxi or adapted taxi (Taxis Amics) directly to the Carretera del Carmel entrance is strongly recommended for wheelchair users.
Wheelchair Accessibility
- The Carretera del Carmel entrance on the east side of the park is the most accessible entrance. It avoids the steep main stairway at the Carrer d'Olot entrance.
- A lift provides access to the Monumental Zone from the Carretera del Carmel entrance.
- Within the Monumental Zone, accessible routes connect the main viewing areas, including the mosaic bench terrace (Placa de la Natura) and the Hypostyle Hall.
- Many paths in the free (non-ticketed) areas of the park are steep, uneven, and include steps. These are difficult or impossible for wheelchair users.
- The Gaudi House Museum is not accessible due to stairs and narrow passages inside the historic building.
- Two wheelchairs are available for loan. Contact [email protected] in advance to reserve.
- Visitors with disabilities can obtain a companion card, allowing one person to accompany them free of charge.
Accessible Toilets
Wheelchair-accessible restrooms are available within the park near the main entrance areas.
Tips for Visitors with Disabilities
- Book timed-entry tickets online in advance. Only 1,400 visitors are admitted per hour.
- An electric wheelchair or power attachment is essential for navigating the park's steep terrain. Manual wheelchair users will need strong assistance.
- Visit in the morning when crowds are smaller and temperatures are cooler.
- Stick to the Monumental Zone accessible routes for the best experience. The free areas of the park are much harder to navigate.
- Tactile models of the park's iconic structures are available for visually impaired visitors.
- Parking for disabled visitors is available near the Carretera del Carmel entrance, but spaces are limited. Arrive early.
- Bring water and sun protection. Much of the park is exposed with limited shade.
