Mostly Accessible

Overview

The Sagrada Familia is Antoni Gaudi's unfinished basilica, under construction since 1882 and now reaching its maximum height of 172.5 meters with the completion of the Tower of Jesus Christ in February 2026. The interior ground floor is fully step-free with wide, open spaces and smooth surfaces that are easy to navigate in a wheelchair. The towers are not accessible to wheelchair users due to narrow spiral staircases. The museum is reachable via a ramp. Free wheelchairs are available to borrow at entrance B on Carrer de la Marina, subject to availability.

Getting There

  • Metro: Sagrada Familia station (Lines L2 and L5) is directly adjacent to the basilica. Both lines have elevator access at this station.
  • Bus: Routes 19, 33, 34, 43, 44, 50, 51, and B20 stop nearby. Barcelona buses are low-floor with ramps.
  • From Placa de Catalunya: Take Metro L2 (purple line) toward Badalona. The ride takes about 10 minutes.

The accessible entrance is on Carrer de Sardenya, at the back of the basilica. A staff member will open the gate and guide you past the turnstiles. This is not the main tourist entrance, so ask a staff member if you cannot find it.

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • The accessible entrance is on Carrer de Sardenya (rear of the building). Staff will assist you through a side gate that bypasses the turnstiles.
  • The entire ground floor interior is flat, smooth, and wide. All visitors use the same pathways, so the experience is fully inclusive.
  • The museum area below the nave is accessible via a ramp.
  • The gift shop is step-free and accessible.
  • The towers are not accessible to wheelchair users. Elevators exist inside the towers, but several steps are required to reach them. Spiral staircases are the only route up and down.
  • Wheelchairs are available for free loan at entrance B on Carrer de la Marina. These are first-come, first-served.
  • Visitors with a certified disability of 65% or higher receive free entry, along with one companion. You must present valid documentation and book tickets in advance online.

Accessible Toilets

An accessible restroom is located inside the basilica with clear signage. The doorway is somewhat narrow, which may be tight for larger wheelchairs. Ask staff for directions if needed.

Tips for Visitors with Disabilities

  • Tickets must be booked online in advance with a specific time slot. Book at least two weeks ahead during peak season (April through October).
  • Arrive at your scheduled time slot and head directly to the accessible entrance on Carrer de Sardenya.
  • The morning slots (9:00am or 10:00am) tend to be less crowded and easier to navigate.
  • Bring your disability certificate and ID for free admission.
  • The surrounding sidewalks on Carrer de Mallorca and Carrer de Marina are flat and paved, making the approach straightforward.
  • The interior can be warm in summer. Bring water.
  • Audio guides are included with most ticket types and work well for visitors who want to explore at their own pace.
