Overview
Barcelona offers various discounts and free admissions for disabled visitors. The exact benefits depend on your documentation, the type of disability card you hold, and the venue. This guide covers the main discount programs and how to access them.
EU Disability Card in Spain
The European Disability Card (EDC) is being gradually adopted in Spain. If you hold an EDC, bring it and present it at ticket counters. Acceptance is growing, but not yet universal. Many venues will accept it as proof of disability for discounts, even if they do not have a formal EDC policy.
Carry any additional disability documentation as backup, such as your national disability card, a doctor's letter, or a disability percentage certificate.
Gaudi Sites
Barcelona's Gaudi buildings each have their own disability discount policy:
Sagrada Familia
- Visitors with a disability of 65% or higher enter free, along with one companion
- You must present valid disability documentation
- Tickets still need to be booked in advance through sagradafamilia.org
- Wheelchair users should enter through the accessible entrance on Carrer de Sardenya
- The towers are not wheelchair accessible due to stairs
Park Guell
- Free entry for visitors with a disability card
- One companion pays a reduced rate (approximately 7 euros)
- Wheelchairs are available and can be booked in advance
- Three designated parking spaces for visitors with reduced mobility
Casa Batllo
- Lifts connect all main floors from street to rooftop
- Wheelchairs narrower than 59 cm fit the historic elevator
- Companions of visually impaired visitors enter free
- Check the website for current disability discount rates
Casa Mila (La Pedrera)
- Visitors with 33% or higher disability receive a reduced ticket price
- Visitors with motor disabilities or 65%+ disability enter free, along with one companion
- The rooftop terrace has uneven terrain and may not be comfortable for wheelchair users
Always Ask
Even if a venue does not advertise disability discounts on its website, ask at the ticket counter. Many Barcelona attractions offer reduced rates for disabled visitors but do not prominently display this information. Show your disability documentation and ask: "Hay descuento por discapacidad?" (Is there a disability discount?).
Museum Discounts
Catalan Public Museums
Many Catalan public museums offer free or reduced entry for visitors with disabilities:
- MNAC (Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya): Free entry on Saturdays from 15:00 and the first Sunday of each month. Visitors with a Catalan disability accreditation enter free. Other disability cards are accepted for reduced rates.
- Picasso Museum: Reduced admission for visitors with recognized disability documentation. Free companion entry for those requiring assistance. Free entry for all on the first Sunday of each month.
- MACBA (Museu d'Art Contemporani): Reduced rates for disabled visitors with documentation.
- CCCB (Centre de Cultura Contemporania): Reduced entry with disability documentation.
Other Museums
- CosmoCaixa (science museum): Reduced rate for disabled visitors
- Fundacio Joan Miro: Reduced admission with disability documentation
- Maritime Museum: Free entry for disabled visitors with documentation
Barcelona Card
The Barcelona Card is the city's official tourist pass, available for 3, 4, or 5 days:
- Unlimited public transport (Metro, bus, tram, and some local trains)
- Free entry to selected museums and attractions
- Discounts at over 100 venues, restaurants, and shops
- Prices start at about 55 euros for 3 days
Accessibility Considerations
- The Barcelona Card works on all accessible TMB services
- If your companion qualifies for free transport with your disability documentation, you may only need to buy one card for yourself
- Purchase online at barcelonaturisme.com or at tourist information offices (Placa Catalunya, Airport, Sants Station)
TMB Public Transport Discounts
TMB (Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona) offers discounts for disabled riders:
- T-16 card: Free travel for children under 16 with a disability
- Disability travel pass: Barcelona residents with an officially recognized disability can get a discounted or free travel card. International visitors generally do not qualify for this card.
- Companion travel: If your disability documentation indicates you require a companion, the companion may travel free on TMB services. Ask at a TMB customer service point for details.
For most international visitors, the standard T-Casual (10-trip card, about 11.35 euros) or the Barcelona Card is the most practical option.
Companion Free Entry
The concept of a free companion for disabled visitors is widely understood in Barcelona. To qualify:
- Your disability card or documentation should indicate that you require a companion or have a high disability percentage (typically 65% or higher)
- Show your documentation at the ticket counter and ask about companion entry
- Spanish disability cards use "necesita acompanante" to indicate companion need
- The EU Disability Card, if it indicates companion need, is increasingly accepted
Practical Tips
- Carry your disability documentation at all times. Keep a photo on your phone as a backup.
- Check venue websites before visiting. Discount information is often listed under "Entrades" (tickets in Catalan) or "Tarifas" (rates in Spanish).
- Tourist information offices at Placa Catalunya, the airport, and Sants Station can help you understand which discounts apply to your situation.
- Many discounts require advance booking, especially at popular sites like Sagrada Familia and Park Guell. Book online and apply your discount code or select the disability ticket option during checkout.
- Keep receipts. If you are charged full price by mistake, you may be able to get a refund at customer service.
