Why Connectivity Matters
Reliable internet access is especially important for disabled travelers. You need it to check real-time elevator status on the TMB app, look up accessible routes, translate signs, communicate with transport services, and find accessible toilets nearby. Plan your connectivity before you arrive so you are never stranded without a map or translator.
EU Roaming Rules
If you have a mobile plan from an EU or EEA country, you can use your home plan's data, calls, and texts in Spain at no extra cost. This is called "Roam Like at Home" and applies to all EU member states.
Key points:
- Your home data allowance works in Spain at the same rate
- Some plans have a fair-use limit on roaming data. Check with your provider before traveling.
- This applies to plans from all 27 EU countries plus Iceland, Norway, and Liechtenstein
- UK plans no longer include free EU roaming since Brexit. Check your provider for Spain-specific roaming charges.
Spanish SIM Cards
If you are from outside the EU, buying a local SIM card is the most cost-effective option for data. Spain's three major carriers are:
| Provider | Prepaid Plan | Where to Buy |
|---|---|---|
| Movistar | From about 10 euros for 5 GB (30 days) | Movistar stores, El Corte Ingles |
| Vodafone | From about 10 euros for 5 GB (28 days) | Vodafone stores, airport kiosks |
| Orange | From about 10 euros for 5 GB (28 days) | Orange stores, convenience shops |
Where to Buy
- Airport: Barcelona El Prat Airport has mobile phone shops and vending machines selling SIM cards in Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 arrivals
- City center: Major carrier stores on Passeig de Gracia, Portal de l'Angel, and around Placa Catalunya. Most have step-free entry.
- El Corte Ingles (Placa Catalunya): The electronics floor sells prepaid SIM cards from all carriers. The store has elevator access.
What You Need
You will need your passport to buy a Spanish SIM card. EU regulations require identity verification for prepaid SIMs.
eSIM Options
If your phone supports eSIM, you can set up a data plan before you leave home. No physical card swap needed. Popular eSIM providers for Spain include:
- Airalo: Plans from about 5 euros for 1 GB (7 days)
- Holafly: Unlimited data plans starting around 6 euros for 1 day
- Nomad: Various data plans with Spain coverage
eSIMs are convenient because you keep your home number active for calls while using the eSIM for data only.
Set Up Before You Fly
Install and activate your eSIM while still on your home WiFi. This way you have data working the moment you land in Barcelona, which is especially useful for arranging accessible transport from the airport.
Barcelona Free WiFi
Barcelona has an extensive free municipal WiFi network called Barcelona WiFi. The city provides hundreds of free hotspots in public locations including:
- Libraries, museums, and civic buildings
- Markets (La Boqueria, Sant Antoni, Santa Caterina)
- Beaches (during summer season)
- Public parks and squares
- Metro stations (limited)
- City buses
To connect, look for the "Barcelona WiFi" network, open your browser, and accept the terms. The connection is adequate for maps, messaging, and basic browsing, but may be slow for video calls or streaming.
Pocket WiFi Rental
If you prefer a dedicated connection shared across multiple devices:
- Several companies rent pocket WiFi devices with delivery to Barcelona hotels or the airport
- Typical cost is 5 to 8 euros per day
- Devices provide a private WiFi network with 4G/5G data
- Useful if you are traveling in a group and want to share one data plan
Practical Tips
- Download offline maps of Barcelona in Google Maps or Maps.me before your trip. These work without any data connection.
- Download the TMB app (Metro and bus) and save important route information offline.
- Download offline language packs for Google Translate (both Spanish and Catalan).
- Hotel WiFi in Barcelona is generally reliable. Most hotels include free WiFi, though accessible rooms on lower floors sometimes get weaker signal. Ask reception for a WiFi booster if needed.
- Save key phone numbers (hotel, emergency, taxi) in your phone before you lose connectivity.
