Spain's Electrical System

Spain uses the same electrical standard as most of continental Europe:

  • Voltage: 230V
  • Frequency: 50Hz
  • Plug types: Type C (two round pins) and Type F (two round pins with grounding clips)

If you are coming from another European country (except the UK, Ireland, or Switzerland), your plugs will likely work without an adapter. Spain does not use the Type L plug found in Italy, so travelers coming from Italy will need an adapter.

Who Needs an Adapter?

Coming FromAdapter Needed?Notes
Most of Europe (DE, FR, NL, etc.)NoType C and F plugs fit Spanish outlets
UK and IrelandYesType G to Type C/F adapter needed
ItalyYesType L plugs do not fit. Use a Type L to Type C adapter.
USA and CanadaYesType A/B to Type C/F adapter needed. Also need voltage converter for non-dual-voltage devices.
Australia and New ZealandYesType I to Type C/F adapter needed
JapanYesType A to Type C/F adapter needed. Also need voltage converter for 100V-only devices.

Voltage Differences

If you are coming from a country with 110-120V power (USA, Canada, Japan, parts of South America), check your device labels before plugging in:

  • Dual voltage devices (labeled "100-240V"): Only need a plug adapter. Most phone chargers, laptop chargers, and tablet chargers are dual voltage.
  • Single voltage devices (labeled "110V" or "120V" only): Need both a plug adapter and a voltage converter. Plugging a 110V device into a 230V outlet without a converter will damage or destroy the device.

Check Your Wheelchair Charger

Before your trip, check the voltage label on your powered wheelchair or scooter charger. Most modern chargers are dual voltage (100-240V), but some older models are single voltage. If yours is single voltage, contact your wheelchair manufacturer about obtaining a 230V charger or a compatible voltage converter.

Charging Powered Wheelchairs and Scooters

Charging your powered wheelchair or mobility scooter in Barcelona requires some planning:

At Your Hotel

  • Inform your hotel when booking that you need to charge a powered wheelchair or scooter
  • Ask for a room with accessible outlets near the floor or near the entrance
  • Standard Spanish outlets deliver 230V, which works for most European and many international chargers
  • Some hotels can provide an extension cord or power strip if outlets are not conveniently placed
  • Charging overnight is typical. A full charge takes 6 to 10 hours for most powered wheelchairs.

Mid-Day Charging

If you need a top-up during the day:

  • Some museums and attractions have charging areas. Ask staff when you arrive.
  • Shopping centers like Diagonal Mar and La Maquinista have seating areas with accessible power outlets
  • Accessible cafes and restaurants will usually let you plug in if you ask
  • Barcelona Sants train station has seating areas with power outlets

Where to Buy Adapters in Barcelona

If you forget your adapter or need a replacement:

  • El Corte Ingles (Placa Catalunya): The electronics floor carries all common adapter types. The store has elevator access and accessible entrance.
  • FNAC (El Triangle, Placa Catalunya): Electronics retailer with adapter selection
  • Mediamarkt (La Maquinista or Diagonal Mar): Large electronics stores in accessible shopping centers
  • Airport shops: Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 at El Prat Airport sell travel adapters, though prices are higher
  • Chinese variety stores ("bazares"): Found on most commercial streets, these carry cheap universal adapters for 3 to 5 euros

Practical Tips

  • Bring at least two adapters so you can charge your phone while your wheelchair charges.
  • A small power strip from home (with the right adapter) lets you charge multiple devices from one Spanish outlet.
  • USB charging is the same worldwide. If your device charges via USB, any USB charger or power bank will work in Spain.
  • Barcelona hotels rated 3 stars and above typically have outlets on both sides of the bed and in the bathroom. Budget hotels may have fewer outlets.
  • Power outages are rare in Barcelona, but bring a portable power bank as a backup for your phone and essential devices.
