About Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN)
Barcelona-El Prat Airport (officially Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat) is located 15 km southwest of central Barcelona. It has two terminals:
- Terminal 1 (T1): The main terminal, handling most international and domestic flights. Opened in 2009, it is modern with wide corridors, elevators at every level, automatic doors, and accessible toilets throughout.
- Terminal 2 (T2): Divided into three sections (T2A, T2B, T2C). Older than T1 but fully equipped with ramps, elevators, and accessible toilets. Used by some low-cost and regional carriers.
Both terminals have tactile floor guidance, accessible check-in counters, lowered information desks, and hearing loop systems at service points.
Booking PRM Assistance
PRM (Person with Reduced Mobility) assistance at Barcelona-El Prat is provided by AENA, the Spanish airport authority. The service is free.
- Request assistance through your airline when booking your flight, or at least 48 hours before departure.
- You can also request assistance directly from AENA online or by phone at +34 91 321 10 00.
- Specify the type of help you need: wheelchair to the gate, boarding assistance, or a meet-and-greet at arrival.
- Arrive at the airport at least 2 hours before departure to give the assistance team time to reach you.
When you arrive, go to a PRM meeting point. These are located in the parking areas, arrivals sidewalk, check-in halls, and inside each terminal. Staff will escort you through security and to your gate.
Autonomous Wheelchair Service
Since March 2025, Terminal 1 airside (Gates A, B, and C) features WHILL autonomous wheelchairs. PRM staff set your destination and the wheelchair navigates to your gate automatically. Ask the PRM team about availability when you arrive.
Without a Pre-Booking
If you did not pre-book PRM assistance, you can still request it at the airport. Press the assistance call button at any PRM meeting point. Wait times without a reservation can be 30 to 60 minutes, especially during peak travel periods.
Getting to Central Barcelona
Option 1: Metro L9 Sud (Recommended)
The Metro L9 Sud line connects the airport to the city. It is a modern, driverless line and every station is fully accessible with elevators, escalators, and platform screen doors.
- Stations: Aeroport T1 and Aeroport T2 are the two airport stations. The line runs north to Zona Universitaria, where you can transfer to L3.
- Frequency: Trains run every 7 minutes, with frequency increasing to every 4 minutes during peak times.
- Accessibility: All 15 stations on L9 Sud have elevators from street level to platform. Trains have level boarding with minimal gaps. Platform screen doors keep the platform edge safe.
- Fare: A special airport supplement applies. A single airport metro ticket costs 5.50 euros (the T-Casual multi-trip card is not valid for airport stations).
- Journey time: About 30 to 35 minutes from T1 to Zona Universitaria.
Option 2: Aerobus (Accessible)
The Aerobus is an express bus service running between the airport and Placa de Catalunya in the city center.
- Routes: A1 (from T1) and A2 (from T2), both ending at Placa de Catalunya.
- Accessibility: All Aerobus vehicles have a wide ramp at the second (middle) entrance. You can remain seated in your wheelchair in the designated space with seat belts provided. No need to fold your wheelchair.
- Frequency: Every 5 to 10 minutes during peak times.
- Journey time: 35 to 40 minutes depending on traffic.
- Fare: 7.75 euros one way, 13.65 euros return.
Option 3: RENFE Train (T2 Only)
RENFE suburban trains (Rodalies) run from T2 to Passeig de Gracia and Barcelona Sants stations.
- Accessibility: Not all carriages are accessible. Request assistance through the Atendo service at least 12 hours in advance by calling +34 91 214 05 05.
- Frequency: Every 30 minutes.
- Journey time: About 25 minutes to Passeig de Gracia, 19 minutes to Sants.
- Fare: Included in the T-Casual card (Zone 1).
- Limitation: The train station is at T2 only. A free shuttle bus connects T1 and T2, but this adds time and an extra transfer.
Option 4: Accessible Taxi
Taxi ranks are located at the exits of both terminals. Barcelona taxis are black and yellow.
- Standard taxis can carry folding wheelchairs in the trunk.
- Wheelchair-accessible taxis (Taxi Adaptat) have rear-loading ramps. Pre-booking is recommended. Call 033 (local) or +34 93 303 30 33 (Radio Taxi).
- Fare: A taxi from the airport to central Barcelona (Placa de Catalunya) costs approximately 25 to 35 euros, including an airport surcharge of 4.20 euros. Night fares are slightly higher.
- Journey time: 25 to 40 minutes depending on traffic.
Our Recommendation
For wheelchair users, Metro L9 Sud or the Aerobus are the best options. L9 Sud is fully accessible with no gaps and no stairs. The Aerobus offers a direct, ramp-equipped ride to the city center. If you need a wheelchair-accessible taxi, pre-book at least a few hours ahead to ensure availability.
