Barcelona Taxis
Barcelona taxis are recognizable by their black and yellow colors. The city has a large taxi fleet, and you will find taxi ranks at major intersections, train stations, hospitals, and tourist areas. Taxis are metered, and all accept credit cards.
Regular Taxis and Folding Wheelchairs
If you use a folding wheelchair and can transfer to a car seat, any standard Barcelona taxi will work. The driver is required to help load your folded wheelchair into the trunk. Larger sedans and minivan-style taxis have more trunk space. When you hail a taxi, let the driver know about the wheelchair so they can open the trunk.
Taxi Adaptat: Wheelchair-Accessible Vehicles
Barcelona operates a fleet of wheelchair-accessible taxis called "Taxi Adaptat." These vehicles have rear-loading ramps or hydraulic lifts that allow you to board while seated in your wheelchair.
Vehicle Features
- Rear-entry ramp or automatic lift for wheelchair boarding.
- Lowered floor for easy access.
- Ample interior space for manual or electric wheelchairs.
- Restraint straps to secure the wheelchair during the ride.
- Space for one companion alongside the wheelchair user.
How to Book
Taxi Adaptat vehicles must be pre-booked. They cannot be hailed from the street. Use one of these methods:
- Phone 033: Call 033 from any Spanish phone (or +34 93 303 30 33 from abroad). This is Radio Taxi 033, Barcelona's largest taxi operator with over 50 adapted vehicles. English-speaking operators are available.
- AMB Taxi App / ElTaxi.App: Download the official Barcelona taxi app and select "Accessible vehicle" when booking. The app shows estimated wait times and allows advance scheduling.
- WhatsApp: Several adapted taxi services accept bookings via WhatsApp. Taxi 24 BCN can be reached at +34 682 463 009.
- Hotel concierge: Most hotels can call a Taxi Adaptat for you. Give them at least 2 to 3 hours' notice for same-day bookings.
Book Ahead
The adapted taxi fleet is limited. For airport transfers and early morning pickups, book the day before. For sightseeing days, book at least 2 to 3 hours in advance. Same-day requests without advance notice may result in wait times of 30 to 60 minutes.
Fares
Barcelona taxis use a metered fare system. There is no surcharge for using a Taxi Adaptat. Key fare details:
| Route | Approximate Fare | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Airport to Placa de Catalunya | 25 to 35 euros | Includes 4.20 euro airport surcharge |
| Airport to Sagrada Familia | 30 to 40 euros | Includes airport surcharge |

| City center to Park Guell | 10 to 15 euros | Uphill ride, 15 to 20 min |

Fare Structure
- Flag drop (minimum fare): Approximately 2.50 euros.
- Per kilometer (daytime, weekdays): About 1.21 euros.
- Per kilometer (nights, weekends, holidays): About 1.45 euros.
- Airport surcharge: 4.20 euros for rides starting or ending at the airport.
- Large luggage surcharge: About 1.00 euro per large item.
- Night tariff: Applies from 8:00 PM to 8:00 AM.
Uber and Cabify
Both Uber and Cabify operate in Barcelona. They work similarly to taxis but are booked exclusively through their apps.
- Uber: Standard Uber vehicles are available. There is no dedicated wheelchair-accessible Uber category in Barcelona. If you use a folding wheelchair and can transfer to a car seat, standard Uber or Uber XL will work. Drivers are required to assist with loading the wheelchair.
- Cabify: Spain's main ride-hailing competitor to Uber. Also no dedicated wheelchair-accessible vehicle option, but standard vehicles can accommodate folding wheelchairs.
Important for Power Wheelchair Users
If you use a power wheelchair and cannot transfer to a car seat, you must use a Taxi Adaptat. Standard taxis, Uber, and Cabify vehicles cannot accommodate a passenger who remains seated in their wheelchair. Always pre-book a Taxi Adaptat for these trips.
Practical Tips
- Tipping: Tipping is not mandatory in Spain. Rounding up to the nearest euro is appreciated but not expected.
- Credit cards: All Barcelona taxis are required to accept credit card payments. There is no minimum charge for cards.
- Service dogs: Service dogs and guide dogs must be accepted in all taxis, including standard vehicles. No extra charge applies.
- Complaints: If a driver refuses to take you without a valid reason, note the taxi license number (displayed on the dashboard and exterior) and file a complaint with the Institut Metropolita del Taxi (IMT) through the AMB Taxi app or by calling 010.
- Airport rank: At the airport, go to the taxi rank outside your terminal. For an adapted taxi, you will need to pre-book rather than wait in the regular taxi line.
