Key Train Stations
Barcelona Sants
Barcelona Sants is the city's main railway station, located in the Sants-Montjuic district. It serves high-speed AVE trains, long-distance services, and regional Rodalies commuter trains.
Accessibility features:
- Elevators to all platforms from the main concourse.
- Accessible toilets on the main level.
- Atendo assistance office located inside the station (see below).
- Ramps and tactile floor guidance throughout.
- Metro connections: L3 (Green) and L5 (Blue), both accessible at this station.
Construction Notice
Barcelona Sants has been undergoing renovation work. During construction, some routes within the station may be temporarily redirected. Allow extra time for navigation and ask station staff for the current accessible path to your platform.
Passeig de Gracia
Passeig de Gracia is centrally located in the Eixample district, near Casa Batllo and Casa Mila. It serves Renfe regional and some long-distance trains, plus RENFE Rodalies. The station has elevator access to platforms and is connected to metro lines L2, L3, and L4 (all accessible at this station).
Estacio de Franca
Estacio de Franca is a historic terminus station near the Born neighborhood. It serves some regional Rodalies routes. The station has been renovated with ramp access and elevators. It handles less traffic than Sants, so it is quieter and easier to navigate.
Renfe Services
Renfe is Spain's national railway operator. From Barcelona, Renfe runs several types of services:
AVE High-Speed Trains
AVE trains connect Barcelona to Madrid (2 hours 30 minutes), Seville, Malaga, Valencia, and other cities. AVE trains have dedicated wheelchair spaces with the following features:
- Wheelchair-accessible carriage with wider doors (at least 80 cm).
- Designated wheelchair space with securing straps and a companion seat.
- Accessible toilet in the same carriage.
- Maximum wheelchair dimensions: 70 cm wide, 130 cm long, 140 cm high (including user).
You must book the wheelchair space in advance through the Atendo service (see below). You cannot simply show up and expect space to be available.
Rodalies (Commuter Trains)
Rodalies de Catalunya is the suburban and regional rail network serving Barcelona and surrounding areas. It has 6 lines (R1 through R4, plus R7 and R8) connecting the city center to suburbs, beaches, and nearby towns.
Accessibility:
- Most Rodalies stations in the Barcelona urban area have elevators and ramps.
- Newer trains have low-floor sections with wheelchair spaces.
- Older trains may have a step at the door. Staff can provide a portable ramp if you request Atendo assistance.
- The platform-to-train gap varies by station. Expect 5 to 15 cm at some stops.
FGC (Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya)
FGC operates commuter rail lines within Catalonia. Two main lines depart from Barcelona:
- Barcelona-Valles line: Connects central Barcelona (Placa Catalunya station) to Sabadell and Terrassa. Useful for reaching the Tibidabo area.
- Llobregat-Anoia line: Connects Placa Espanya station to Martorell, Igualada, and Monistrol de Montserrat (for the Montserrat Rack Railway).
FGC Accessibility
FGC has adapted approximately 90% of its stations with elevators, ramps, and tactile floor guidance. All newer train carriages have a designated wheelchair space behind the driver's compartment. Key points:
- Placa Catalunya FGC station: Fully accessible with elevators.
- Placa Espanya FGC station: Fully accessible, serves the Montjuic area.
- Montserrat: The FGC train to Monistrol de Montserrat station is accessible. However, the Montserrat Rack Railway (Cremallera) that climbs the mountain has limited accessibility. Contact FGC in advance to confirm current conditions.
Montserrat Access
If you plan to visit Montserrat by train, contact FGC customer service in advance to check the accessibility status of both the Cremallera rack railway and the cable car. Conditions can vary, and the mountain terrain presents challenges that change seasonally.
Atendo Assistance Service
Atendo is a free assistance service provided jointly by Renfe and Adif (the railway infrastructure manager) for travelers with disabilities. The service covers:
- Guidance through the station to your platform.
- Help boarding and getting off the train using portable ramps or platform lifts.
- Assistance with luggage if needed.
- Meeting you on arrival and helping you exit the station.
How to Book Atendo
- By phone: Call +34 91 214 05 05. Lines are open daily from 6:30 AM to 11:00 PM.
- Online: Book through the Renfe website (renfe.com) or the Renfe app when purchasing your ticket. Select the "Atendo" assistance option.
- Advance notice: Request assistance at least 12 hours before your train for high-speed (AVE) and long-distance services. For Rodalies commuter trains, 12 hours advance notice is also recommended, though some stations offer walk-up assistance.
Atendo at Barcelona Sants
Barcelona Sants has a dedicated Atendo office inside the station. If you arrive without a pre-booking, go to the Atendo desk and request assistance directly. They can usually help within 15 to 30 minutes, but pre-booking is always more reliable.
Ticket Booking for Wheelchair Users
When booking AVE or long-distance train tickets:
- Go to renfe.com and select your route and date.
- During the passenger details step, select "PMR" (Person with Reduced Mobility) or the wheelchair option.
