Overview
The Berlin Philharmonie, designed by architect Hans Scharoun and completed in 1963, is home to the world-famous Berlin Philharmonic orchestra. The building's revolutionary "vineyard-style" design places the stage at the center with seating rising around it in terraced sections, giving every seat a close connection to the music. The Philharmonie has wheelchair spaces in the main hall (Grosser Saal), elevator access, a hearing loop system, and accessible entrances. Free lunchtime concerts on Tuesdays during the season offer an accessible way to experience this legendary venue. The building is rated "Mostly Accessible" because navigating between levels requires using specific routes, and the building's unique architecture means some seating areas are only reachable by stairs.
Getting There
- S-Bahn/U-Bahn: Potsdamer Platz (S1, S2, S25, S26, U2) has elevator access. The Philharmonie is a 7-minute roll west along Potsdamer Strasse. The sidewalk is flat and paved.
- Bus: Routes M29, M48, and 200 stop at Philharmonie on Herbert-von-Karajan-Strasse, directly outside the main entrance.
- Accessible entrance: The accessible entrance is on the south side of the building at street level on Herbert-von-Karajan-Strasse. It is clearly marked with an accessibility symbol. Ring the bell and staff will open the door and guide you to the elevator.
Wheelchair Accessibility
- The accessible entrance on the south side is step-free and staffed during performance times. It leads directly to the elevator lobby.
- Elevators serve multiple levels of the building, connecting the entrance level with the main concert hall, the Chamber Music Hall (Kammermusiksaal), and the foyer areas.
- The main concert hall (Grosser Saal, capacity 2,440) has designated wheelchair spaces. These are positioned to provide excellent sight lines and acoustic quality. The number of wheelchair spaces is limited, so advance booking is strongly recommended.
- The Chamber Music Hall (Kammermusiksaal, capacity 1,180) also has wheelchair spaces, accessible via the same elevator system.
- A hearing loop system (Induktionsschleife) is installed in the main hall. Switch your hearing aid to the "T" (telecoil) setting to use it.
- The foyer and bar areas on the accessible levels have step-free access. The bar counter is at standard height, but staff will bring drinks to you if needed.
The free Tuesday lunchtime concerts (Lunchkonzerte) at 1:00pm during the concert season (September to June) are an excellent accessible option. No ticket is needed, doors open at 12:00pm, and wheelchair spaces are available on a first come, first served basis. Arrive by 12:15pm to secure a wheelchair spot.
Accessible Toilets
Accessible toilets are located on the entrance level near the elevator lobby. They have grab rails, emergency pull cords, and sufficient maneuvering space. During intermissions at performances, the accessible toilets are less crowded than the main facilities.
Tips for Visitors with Disabilities
- Ticket prices vary by performance. Evening concerts by the Berlin Philharmonic typically range from 25 to 150 EUR depending on the program and seat category. Wheelchair spaces are priced at the lowest category for that performance.
- One companion ticket is free when you book a wheelchair space. Contact the box office directly by phone or email for wheelchair bookings, as the online system may not show all accessible options.
- Book wheelchair spaces as early as possible. Popular performances by the Berlin Philharmonic sell out quickly, and wheelchair spaces are limited.
- Lunchtime concerts on Tuesdays are free and require no ticket. These feature chamber music by members of the Berlin Philharmonic and last approximately 1 hour.
- The building's unique tent-like exterior is worth seeing from outside, even if you do not attend a performance. The Kulturforum plaza in front is flat and paved.
- Combine your visit with the Gemaldegalerie next door and the Topography of Terror (10-minute roll southeast) for a full day at the Kulturforum.
- Guided tours of the Philharmonie building are available and can be arranged for wheelchair users. Contact the administrative office in advance.
- The cloakroom at the entrance level is accessible and free. Coats and bags must be left there during performances.
- Arrive at least 30 minutes before a performance. Staff at the accessible entrance will guide you to your wheelchair space and ensure you are settled before the concert begins.
