Mostly Accessible

Overview

The Deutsches Technikmuseum (German Museum of Technology) is one of Europe's largest technology museums, covering transportation, communication, energy, and industrial history across multiple buildings and an outdoor park on a former rail yard. The museum's rooftop is famous for the "Raisin Bomber," a Douglas C-47 aircraft mounted on the building that is visible from across the neighborhood. Inside, you will find historic trains, ships, aircraft, and printing presses. The museum is rated "Mostly Accessible" because the main building has elevator access, and the Science Center Spectrum is fully accessible, but some outdoor areas on the old rail yard have uneven surfaces.

Getting There

  • U-Bahn: Gleisdreieck (U1, U2) has elevator access to street level. The museum entrance on Trebbiner Strasse is a 5-minute roll south from the station. The sidewalk is flat and paved.
  • U-Bahn alternative: Mockernbrucke (U1, U7) is also nearby, about a 5-minute roll. This station has elevator access.
  • Bus: Route M41 stops on Schoneberger Strasse, a 3-minute roll from the museum entrance.
  • Accessible entrance: The main entrance on Trebbiner Strasse is step-free. Automatic doors lead into the ticket hall.

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • The main entrance is step-free with automatic doors. The ticket counter and information desk are accessible.
  • The main museum building has elevators serving all floors, including the aviation and shipping exhibitions on upper levels.
  • The Science Center Spectrum (a hands-on science exhibition in a separate building within the museum grounds) is fully accessible. It was renovated in 2019 with accessibility as a priority. All interactive stations are reachable from a wheelchair.
  • The historic train collection is displayed in two locomotive halls. These halls have flat concrete floors and wide aisles between the trains. You can get close to the locomotives and wagons.
  • The outdoor museum park occupies a former rail yard. The main paths are paved, but some secondary paths leading to specific exhibits use gravel or have uneven surfaces from the old rail infrastructure.
  • Wheelchair loan is available free of charge at the main entrance. First come, first served.
  • The maritime exhibition includes ship models and full-size boats. The indoor galleries are fully accessible. Some outdoor vessels can only be viewed from outside.

This is a large museum. Plan at least half a day to see the highlights. Start with the Science Center Spectrum for hands-on science exhibits, then move to the main building for aviation and trains. The outdoor park can wait for good weather.

Accessible Toilets

Accessible toilets are located in the main museum building (ground floor near the entrance), in the Science Center Spectrum building, and near the outdoor cafe area. All have grab rails and emergency pull cords.

Tips for Visitors with Disabilities

  • Admission is 8 EUR per adult. One companion enters free with a German disability ID with "B" marker or equivalent documentation.
  • The museum is closed on Mondays. Weekday mornings are the least crowded times.
  • The "Raisin Bomber" plane on the roof (a tribute to the 1948 Berlin Airlift) is best seen from outside the building on Trebbiner Strasse or from the park. It is not accessible to enter.
  • The printing press demonstrations on the ground floor of the main building take place several times daily. Staff demonstrate historic printing machines in an accessible workshop area. Check the schedule at the entrance.
  • The museum cafe in the park area has outdoor seating on a flat paved terrace. It serves hot meals and snacks. Tables are movable and can accommodate wheelchair users.
  • The sugar and textile production exhibitions on the ground floor are fully accessible and often overlooked by visitors heading straight to trains and planes.
  • Gleisdreieck Park, directly adjacent to the museum, has wide paved paths and is a pleasant accessible green space for a post-visit break.
  • The museum shop near the entrance is step-free with wide aisles. It carries science kits, model trains, and books.
