Mostly Accessible

Overview

The Reichstag Building (Reichstagsgebäude) is the seat of the German parliament (Bundestag) and one of Berlin's most visited landmarks. The highlight for visitors is the glass dome designed by architect Norman Foster, which offers panoramic views of the city. The dome and rooftop terrace are accessible by elevator, and admission is free. Advance registration is required for all visitors. The building earns a "Mostly Accessible" rating because while the dome, terrace, and visitor areas are step-free, some areas of the building are restricted and the surrounding grounds have uneven surfaces in places.

Getting There

  • U-Bahn: Bundestag station (U5) has elevator access. The Reichstag is a 4-minute roll from the station exit along a flat path.
  • Bus: Route 100 stops at Reichstag/Bundestag. Low-floor buses with ramps operate on this route.
  • From Brandenburg Gate: The Reichstag is a 5-minute roll north from Pariser Platz along a flat, paved sidewalk.

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • The accessible entrance is on the west side of the building (facing Platz der Republik). Look for signs directing visitors with reduced mobility. Staff will assist at the entrance.
  • A large elevator takes visitors from the ground floor directly to the rooftop terrace and glass dome level. The elevator fits standard and power wheelchairs comfortably.
  • The rooftop terrace is flat with smooth surfaces. It wraps around the dome and offers 360-degree views of Berlin.
  • Inside the glass dome, a spiral ramp rises to the top. The ramp is wide enough for wheelchairs and has a gentle gradient. However, it can be crowded during peak hours, making passing difficult.
  • Free wheelchair loan is available at the visitor entrance. Request one when you check in.
  • A free audio guide is provided to all visitors. It activates automatically based on your position on the dome ramp.

Book your visit at least 2 weeks in advance on the Bundestag website. Slots fill quickly, especially for weekend visits. When registering, indicate that you need accessible access so staff can prepare accordingly.

Security Screening

All visitors pass through airport-style security screening. The security area is step-free. If you cannot pass through the metal detector in your wheelchair, staff will perform a manual screening. Allow 15 to 20 minutes for the security process during busy periods.

Accessible Toilets

Accessible toilets are located on the rooftop level near the dome entrance and on the ground floor near the visitor check-in area. Both have grab rails, emergency cords, and sufficient turning space.

Tips for Visitors with Disabilities

  • Registration is mandatory. Visit the Bundestag website and fill out the online form. You will need your passport or ID number.
  • Evening visits (after 7:00pm) are less crowded and offer views of Berlin's city lights from the dome.
  • The restaurant on the rooftop level (Kafer Dachgarten) is wheelchair accessible and serves German cuisine. Reservations are separate from dome visits.
  • Bring a valid ID or passport. You cannot enter without one.
  • The area between the Reichstag and Brandenburg Gate is flat and paved, making it easy to combine both visits in one outing.
  • In cold or wet weather, the dome ramp can be slippery. The surface is smooth metal. Take care and move slowly.
