Overview

The S-Bahn (Stadtschnellbahn) is Berlin's city rail network, operated by S-Bahn Berlin GmbH, a subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn (DB). It has 16 lines serving over 160 stations across Berlin and the surrounding Brandenburg region. The S-Bahn runs from about 4:00 AM to 1:30 AM on weekdays, and 24 hours on Friday and Saturday nights.

The S-Bahn complements the U-Bahn by covering longer distances and connecting outer neighborhoods. It also provides the main rail connection to BER airport.

Step-Free Access

The majority of S-Bahn stations are step-free from street to platform. Most stations have elevators (Aufzug), and many suburban stations have at-grade (ground-level) platform access. The exact number of accessible stations continues to grow as DB upgrades older infrastructure.

A few older stations, particularly on the north-south route through central Berlin, may have narrow elevators or longer distances between the entrance and the platform. Check the BVG app or the DB station information page for details on specific stations before traveling.

Key Accessible S-Bahn Stations

  • Berlin Hauptbahnhof: Fully accessible with multiple large elevators. Connects to long-distance trains, the U5 line, and the FEX to BER airport.
  • Friedrichstrasse: Elevators to all platforms. Central location for museums and Unter den Linden.
  • Alexanderplatz: Step-free access to S-Bahn, U-Bahn (U2, U5, U8), trams, and buses.
  • Ostkreuz: Major interchange station, recently rebuilt with full step-free access and elevators to every platform.
  • Suedkreuz: Fully accessible. Connects to long-distance trains and the Ringbahn.
  • Zoologischer Garten: Elevators available. Located near the Berlin Zoo and Kurfuerstendamm shopping area.

Boarding the Train

S-Bahn trains are slightly raised above the platform. The gap is typically 5 to 10 centimeters wide and up to 5 centimeters in height. At newer stations, the platform height has been adjusted to reduce this gap. Most wheelchair users can board independently, but the gap can be challenging at some older stations.

There are no portable ramps at S-Bahn stations as standard equipment. If you need boarding assistance, book help through the DB Mobility Service (see below).

Each S-Bahn car has a designated wheelchair space near the doors, marked with the wheelchair symbol. The doors open automatically at most stations, but at smaller stops you may need to press the green door button.

DB Mobility Service (Mobilitaetsservice)

Deutsche Bahn offers a free mobility assistance service for wheelchair users and passengers with reduced mobility. You can book help with boarding, alighting, and changing trains.

How to book:

  • Phone: Call the DB Mobilitaetsservice-Zentrale at +49 30 65212888. Available daily from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
  • Online: Use the DB website or the DB Navigator app to request assistance when booking your journey.
  • Advance notice: Book at least one working day before your trip.

The service covers S-Bahn, regional trains, and long-distance trains at staffed stations. Staff will meet you at the agreed location and help you board using a mobile ramp if needed.

The Ring Lines (S41 and S42)

The Ringbahn is a circular route around central Berlin, served by lines S41 (clockwise) and S42 (counterclockwise). The full circuit takes about 60 minutes. Most Ringbahn stations have elevators and step-free access. This line is useful for reaching major interchange stations like Ostkreuz, Suedkreuz, Westkreuz, and Gesundbrunnen without traveling through the city center.

Ring Line Tip

The Ringbahn runs every 5 to 10 minutes during the day. If your destination is on the Ring, check which direction (S41 or S42) gets you there faster. Both directions stop at every station.

Connection to BER Airport

The S-Bahn provides a direct connection to BER airport on lines S9 and S45.

  • S9: Runs from Spandau through central Berlin (Alexanderplatz, Ostkreuz) to BER. Journey from Alexanderplatz takes about 50 minutes.
  • S45: Runs from Suedkreuz to BER. Faster if coming from southern Berlin.

Both lines stop at the BER Terminal 1-2 station, which is directly below the terminal. The station has elevators to the arrivals and departures levels. You need an ABC zone ticket for this journey.

Tickets

S-Bahn tickets are fully integrated with the BVG system. The same tickets work on U-Bahn, S-Bahn, buses, and trams. Buy tickets from machines at any station, from the BVG app, or from the DB Navigator app.

  • Single ticket (AB zone): About 3.50 euros, valid for 2 hours.
  • Day ticket (AB zone): About 9.50 euros.
  • ABC zone ticket: About 4.40 euros single, needed for BER airport and Potsdam.

Remember to validate paper tickets at the yellow or red machines on the platform before boarding.

Elevator Outages

S-Bahn elevator status is shown in the BVG app and on the DB website. If an elevator at your destination is out of service, the app can suggest an alternative step-free route using nearby stations or bus connections.
