Overview
The Basilica Cistern (Yerebatan Sarnici) is a massive underground water storage chamber built in 532 AD by Emperor Justinian I. It holds 336 marble columns, each 9 meters tall, arranged in 12 rows. The cistern underwent a major renovation that was completed in 2022, which significantly improved accessibility. A platform lift was installed, and raised walkways replaced the old uneven paths. The atmospheric lighting and shallow water below the walkways create a dramatic, memorable experience. The famous Medusa head column bases are located at the far end of the cistern and are reachable via the accessible walkways.
Getting There
- Tram: Sultanahmet stop (T1 Bagcilar-Kabatas line) is a 2-minute roll north along Yerebatan Caddesi. The entrance is on the left side of the street.
- Bus: Routes along Divanyolu Caddesi stop within a 5-minute roll.
- Walking from Hagia Sophia: The cistern entrance is directly across the street from the Hagia Sophia entrance, about a 1-minute roll.
The cistern entrance is at street level on Yerebatan Caddesi. Look for the small stone building with a ticket office. The accessible entrance with the platform lift is on the side facing Alemdar Street.
Wheelchair Accessibility
- A wheelchair platform lift on the Alemdar Street side takes you down to the cistern level, bypassing the main staircase. Ask staff to operate it for you.
- Inside, raised metal walkways run throughout the cistern. These are wide enough for a wheelchair and have railings.
- The walkways cover the main route through the cistern, including the path to the Medusa head columns at the far end.
- Only one platform lift is available. If another wheelchair user is using it, wait times of up to 30 minutes are possible.
- The cistern is underground, so the air is cool and damp. Surfaces can be slippery from moisture and condensation. Take care with wheelchair grip.
- The cistern does not provide wheelchairs. Bring your own.
The walkways can be slippery due to moisture from the water below. Manual wheelchair users should take care with braking, and a companion is recommended. The lighting is intentionally dim for atmosphere, which can make it harder to see surface conditions.
Accessible Toilets
There is a restroom area near the entrance/exit at ground level. Facilities are basic but functional. An accessible stall is available, though space is limited.
Tips for Visitors with Disabilities
- Wheelchair users and one companion enter free. Present documentation at the ticket office.
- The evening session (7:30pm to 10:00pm) features special lighting and sound effects. It costs more but is less crowded and may be easier to navigate.
- The cistern is cool year-round (around 10 to 12 degrees Celsius). Bring a jacket, especially in summer when the temperature contrast with outside is significant.
- Photography is allowed. The columns and water reflections create striking images.
- The Museum Pass Istanbul is not valid here. Purchase tickets separately at the door or online.
- Allow 30 to 45 minutes for your visit.
- The exit leads to Alemdar Street, which is slightly uphill but paved and manageable.
