Overview
A Bosphorus cruise is one of the best ways to experience Istanbul from the water, passing Ottoman palaces, waterfront mansions, fortresses, and both suspension bridges connecting Europe and Asia. The city-run Sehir Hatlari company operates public cruises from Eminonu Pier 2, offering short (90-minute), full-day (6-hour), and sunset options. Newer vessels in the fleet have accessible lower decks, and pier staff will assist with boarding. However, the gap between pier and boat can vary with tide and weather, so conditions are not always predictable.
Getting There
- Tram: Eminonu stop (T1 Bagcilar-Kabatas line) is directly beside the ferry piers, about a 3-minute roll.
- From Sultanahmet: Take the T1 tram two stops toward Kabatas. Level boarding at all T1 stations.
- From Taksim: Take the funicular to Kabatas, then T1 tram to Eminonu (about 20 minutes total).
The Sehir Hatlari pier is Pier 2 at Eminonu. When coming from the Galata Bridge direction, the Sehir Hatlari ticket office and boarding area are on the left side of the waterfront.
Wheelchair Accessibility
- Newer Sehir Hatlari ferries have accessible lower decks with space for wheelchairs. Older vessels may be less accommodating.
- Pier staff will assist with boarding and disembarking. Contact Sehir Hatlari in advance to let them know about your accessibility needs so they can assign a suitable vessel.
- The gap between pier and boat varies depending on tide, weather, and the specific vessel. A portable ramp may be deployed, but this is not guaranteed.
- The lower deck is enclosed and has seating. Upper open-air decks on most vessels are reached by stairs only.
- Private tour operators also offer accessible Bosphorus cruises with better boarding arrangements. These cost more but provide a more controlled experience.
Boarding conditions change with each departure. There may be a gap or step between the pier and the vessel. Always inform the ticket office of your wheelchair use when purchasing tickets so staff can prepare assistance.
Accessible Toilets
Newer vessels have toilets on the lower deck, but these are typically small and not designed for wheelchair access. Use the public accessible restroom at the Eminonu waterfront area before boarding.
Tips for Visitors with Disabilities
- Call Sehir Hatlari before your visit to confirm which vessels are running and which are most accessible.
- The short cruise (90 minutes) is the most practical option. The full 6-hour cruise involves stopping at distant piers that may be less accessible.
- Arrive at least 30 minutes early to allow time for boarding assistance.
- Bring layers, as it can be windy on the water even in warm weather.
- A companion is strongly recommended to help with boarding and any unexpected gaps or steps.
- The Eminonu waterfront area has uneven cobblestones in some sections. Stick to the main paved paths near the piers.
