Partially Accessible

Overview

The Chora Church (Kariye Mosque/Kariye Camii) holds some of the finest surviving Byzantine mosaics and frescoes in the world, dating from the 14th century. Originally built as a church, converted to a mosque in 1511, then a museum in 1945, it was reconverted to a mosque in 2020 and reopened for regular worship in May 2024 after a four-year restoration. The small building (742 square meters) is located in the Fatih neighborhood near the old Theodosian city walls, well away from the main tourist center of Sultanahmet. Wheelchair access is limited due to the building's age and compact design.

Getting There

  • By taxi: The most practical option for wheelchair users. Ask for "Kariye Camii" in Edirnekapi. The ride from Sultanahmet takes about 15 minutes (longer in traffic).
  • By bus: Several bus routes stop near Edirnekapi, but bus accessibility varies. The 28, 87, and 91O lines serve the area.
  • On foot from Sultanahmet: Not recommended for wheelchair users. The distance is about 4.5 km through hilly streets with poor pavement.

Visitors enter from Kariye Turbesi Sokak on the north side and walk around to the entrance on the south side of the building, passing through security. Ask the taxi to drop you as close to the entrance as possible.

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • The entrance area has a threshold that may include steps. Official accessibility details for the restored mosque are limited. Contact the site in advance to confirm current conditions.
  • The interior is compact with narrow doorways between the outer narthex, inner narthex, and main nave. Maneuvering a standard wheelchair through these spaces may be tight but possible.
  • The floor surfaces include stone and marble, which can be uneven in places.
  • As an active mosque, shoes must be removed and the prayer area is carpeted.
  • The surrounding streets in the Edirnekapi neighborhood are steep and uneven cobblestone, making independent wheelchair travel very difficult.

This site is located in a residential neighborhood far from the main tourist areas. The surrounding streets are steep, narrow, and have poor pavement. A taxi directly to the entrance is strongly recommended for wheelchair users.

Accessible Toilets

There are basic public restrooms near the mosque courtyard. These are not specifically designed for wheelchair access. Plan accordingly before visiting.

Tips for Visitors with Disabilities

  • The mosaics and frescoes are the main draw. Most are visible from the narthex areas at ground level, so even limited access provides a rewarding experience.
  • Visit on a weekday morning for smaller crowds and easier movement through narrow spaces.
  • Combine with a visit to the nearby Theodosian Walls, which can be viewed from street level.
  • The building is small, so a visit takes only 30 to 45 minutes.
  • Dress modestly: cover shoulders and knees, and women should cover their hair. Free headscarves may be available at the entrance.
  • Photography policies may vary. Check with staff on arrival.
