Overview
Dolmabahce Palace replaced Topkapi Palace as the main residence of Ottoman sultans in 1856. Sitting directly on the Bosphorus waterfront, this European-style palace is home to the world's largest Bohemian crystal chandelier (4.5 tonnes), a grand ceremonial hall, and lavishly decorated rooms across 285 rooms and 46 halls. The palace sits on flat ground at sea level, making it one of Istanbul's more accessible historic sites. Ramps and an elevator have been installed to provide access to the Selamlik (ceremonial wing) and the Ceremonial Hall. Free wheelchairs are available at the entrance. Visitors with disabilities and one companion enter free of charge.
Getting There
- Tram: Kabatas stop (T1 Bagcilar-Kabatas line) is the end of the line, about a 7-minute roll along the waterfront to the palace gate. The path is flat and paved.
- Funicular: From Taksim, take the F1 funicular down to Kabatas, then roll along the waterfront.
- Bus: Multiple bus routes stop at Kabatas terminal, which is adjacent to the tram and funicular stations.
- Ferry: Kabatas ferry terminal is next to the tram stop, offering connections from the Asian side.
The flat waterfront walk from Kabatas tram stop to the palace gate is one of the most pleasant accessible routes in Istanbul. The promenade is smooth, wide, and has Bosphorus views the entire way.
Wheelchair Accessibility
- A long ramp next to the main entrance of the Selamlik building leads directly to the ground floor. It is specifically designed for wheelchairs and strollers.
- A special elevator provides access to the Sufera Hall and the Ceremonial Hall, allowing wheelchair users to view the famous Crystal Staircase and the enormous chandelier from the upper floor.
- The Harem section is accessible with ramps at key transition points.
- Free wheelchairs are available from staff at the palace entrance, in case you need one.
- Visits are guided tours only. The palace assigns groups, and staff will assist wheelchair users throughout the tour.
- Upper floors of the palace are not accessible. Wheelchair users experience the ground floor and the Ceremonial Hall via elevator.
- It is recommended that wheelchair users come with a companion for assistance on some sloping ramps and transitions.
Accessible Toilets
Accessible restrooms are available near the palace entrance and within the palace complex. These have grab rails and adequate space for wheelchair maneuvering. Staff can direct you to the nearest accessible restroom.
