Overview
The Galata Bridge (Galata Koprusu) is Istanbul's iconic double-deck bridge spanning the Golden Horn, connecting the historic Eminonu district on the south to Karakoy and Beyoglu on the north. The upper level carries road traffic and has a wide, flat pedestrian walkway. The lower level is lined with fish restaurants. Above, fishermen line the railings day and night. The bridge offers panoramic views of the Suleymaniye Mosque, Galata Tower, Topkapi Palace, and the Bosphorus. It is free, open 24 hours, and the upper pedestrian level is fully accessible for wheelchair users.
Getting There
- Tram: Eminonu stop (T1 line) on the south side, or Karakoy stop (T1 line) on the north side. Both are immediately beside the bridge. The bridge has sidewalk access from both tram stops.
- From Sultanahmet: Take the T1 tram one stop to Eminonu, then walk to the bridge (3 minutes).
- On foot from Galata Tower: Walk downhill from the Galata Tower through Karakoy to the north end of the bridge (about 10 minutes, but streets are steep and cobblestoned).
The bridge is a natural connection between two areas you will likely visit. Cross it when traveling between Eminonu/Sultanahmet and Karakoy/Beyoglu, and enjoy the views along the way.
Wheelchair Accessibility
- The upper level pedestrian walkway is flat, smooth, and about 5 meters wide. It spans the entire length of the bridge (490 meters) with no elevation changes, steps, or barriers.
- The pedestrian walkway is separated from the vehicle lanes by a barrier, so it is safe to roll along.
- The lower level (fish restaurants) is accessible via ramps at each end of the bridge. These ramps can be steep and may require assistance for manual wheelchair users. Some restaurant entrances on the lower level may have narrow doorways.
- Benches are available along the upper level for rest stops.
- The bridge surface is smooth concrete, suitable for all types of wheelchairs.
The lower level ramps are steep. If you want to visit the fish restaurants, you may need a companion to help with the incline. Alternatively, some lower level restaurants can be accessed from the Eminonu waterfront at the bridge's south end.
Accessible Toilets
There are no public restrooms on the bridge itself. The nearest accessible restrooms are at the Eminonu waterfront area (south side) or in Karakoy (north side). Lower level restaurants have restrooms, but these are typically small and may not be wheelchair accessible.
Tips for Visitors with Disabilities
- Cross the bridge at sunset for the best views and golden light on the mosques and Galata Tower.
- The upper level is the main attraction for views. You do not need to visit the lower level to enjoy the bridge.
- Watch for fishing lines and hooks along the railings. Fishermen line both sides of the bridge, and their lines extend over the walkway.
- The bridge can be windy, especially in cooler months. Bring a jacket.
- Walking or rolling across takes about 10 to 15 minutes at a comfortable pace.
- The Eminonu end of the bridge is very close to the Spice Bazaar and the ferry terminals. The Karakoy end is near the Galata Tower and Istanbul Modern.
- The bridge is busiest in the late afternoon and evening. For a quieter crossing, visit in the morning.
