Overview
The Grand Bazaar (Kapali Carsi) is one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, dating back to 1461. It contains over 4,000 shops spread across 61 covered streets, selling everything from carpets and jewelry to ceramics and leather goods. The main corridors are covered and mostly flat, but the stone flooring is old and uneven in many places. The bazaar gets extremely crowded, especially on weekends and during tourist season. While wheelchair users can navigate the main corridors, the experience requires patience and a willingness to deal with tight spaces and uneven ground.
Getting There
- Tram: Beyazit-Kapalicarsi stop (T1 Bagcilar-Kabatas line) is the closest, about a 3-minute roll to the Beyazit Gate entrance.
- Bus: Several routes stop along Ordu Caddesi near the Beyazit Gate.
- Taxi: Ask to be dropped off at the Beyazit Gate (Beyazit Kapisi) for the most level entrance.
The Beyazit Gate (Gate 7, on the south side near the tram stop) is the most accessible entrance. It has a relatively level threshold compared to other gates. Avoid the Nuruosmaniye Gate, which involves a sloped and crowded approach.
Wheelchair Accessibility
- The main corridors (Kalpakcilar Caddesi and Halicilar Caddesi) are the widest and flattest routes through the bazaar. Stick to these for the easiest navigation.
- Stone flooring throughout the bazaar is old, worn, and uneven. Small bumps, dips, and misaligned stones are common.
- Some of the 22 entrance gates have steps or raised thresholds. The Beyazit Gate is the most level option.
- Side alleys and smaller lanes between shops can be very narrow, making wheelchair passage difficult or impossible.
- Crowds are the biggest challenge. During peak hours (11:00am to 4:00pm), the corridors are packed and moving a wheelchair through them can be extremely slow.
- Some shops have raised thresholds or steps at their entrances.
- No wheelchair rental is available in the bazaar.
The bazaar gets very crowded, especially midday and on Saturdays. Wheelchair users should visit early in the morning (8:30am to 10:00am) or in the last hour before closing for a more manageable experience.
Accessible Toilets
Public toilets are located inside the bazaar, but they are generally basic and not wheelchair accessible. The restrooms near the Beyazit Gate are slightly better maintained. Consider using hotel or restaurant facilities nearby instead.
Tips for Visitors with Disabilities
- Visit early morning on a weekday for the best experience. The bazaar is far less crowded before 10:00am.
- Stick to the two or three main corridors rather than trying to explore every alley.
- The cobblestone streets surrounding the bazaar are some of the roughest in Istanbul. The approach from the tram stop to the Beyazit Gate is manageable but uneven.
- Shopkeepers are generally friendly and may offer to bring items out to the corridor if their shop is not accessible.
- The bazaar is not air-conditioned. It can be very warm in summer despite being covered.
- Allow 1 to 2 hours for a focused visit along the main corridors.
- Pickpocketing can occur in crowds. Keep valuables secure and in front of you.
