Overview
Istanbul Modern is Turkey's first museum of modern and contemporary art. In May 2023, it reopened in a stunning new five-story building designed by Renzo Piano, located on the Bosphorus waterfront at Galataport in the Tophane-Karakoy area. The 10,500-square-meter building was purpose-built with universal design principles, featuring a transparent ground floor that connects directly to the waterfront promenade. As a new, purpose-built museum, it is one of Istanbul's most accessible cultural venues, with elevators, wide galleries, and step-free access throughout.
Getting There
- Tram: Tophane stop (T1 Bagcilar-Kabatas line) is a 5-minute flat roll along the waterfront promenade to the museum entrance. The Galataport promenade has smooth, wide paving.
- From Sultanahmet: Take the T1 tram to Tophane (about 15 minutes).
- From Taksim: Walk or roll downhill through Beyoglu (about 20 minutes), or take the funicular to Kabatas and T1 tram one stop to Tophane.
- Parking: Galataport has parking. The J entrance is closest to the museum.
The Galataport promenade is a modern, flat, wide waterfront walkway that connects the museum to the surrounding area. It is one of the most wheelchair-friendly outdoor spaces in Istanbul.
