Mostly Accessible

Overview

Istiklal Avenue (Istiklal Caddesi) is Istanbul's most famous pedestrian street, stretching 1.4 km from Taksim Square downhill to Tunel Square in the Beyoglu district. Lined with shops, restaurants, consulates, historic buildings, and art galleries, it draws millions of visitors each year. The street is wide and mostly smooth-paved, making it one of the more wheelchair-friendly areas in central Istanbul. Taksim Square at the top is flat and open. A nostalgic red tram runs along the middle of the avenue, but it is not wheelchair accessible.

Getting There

  • Metro: Taksim station (M2 Yenikapi-Haciosman line) has elevators to street level and exits directly onto Taksim Square at the top of Istiklal Avenue.
  • Funicular: Taksim station (F1 Kabatas-Taksim funicular) connects to the Kabatas waterfront. The funicular is wheelchair accessible.
  • Tunel funicular: At the bottom (south) end of Istiklal Avenue, the Tunel funicular connects to the Karakoy waterfront. All Tunel entries are accessible.

Start at Taksim Square and roll downhill toward Tunel for the easiest route. The gentle slope means you gain momentum going south. Walking back uphill to Taksim is more tiring, so consider taking the Tunel funicular down to Karakoy and the tram back instead.

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • The main paved surface is smooth and wide enough for comfortable wheelchair travel, even in crowds.
  • Some sections have paving changes and dropped curbs that do not always go fully flush with the road. Watch for small bumps and uneven patches.
  • The nostalgic tram runs on tracks embedded in the street center. The tram itself has steps and is not wheelchair accessible. Be aware of the tram approaching, as it rings a bell but moves through crowds slowly.
  • Taksim Square is flat, open, and fully paved with smooth surfaces.
  • Side streets off Istiklal are often steep and cobblestoned, making them difficult for wheelchairs.

Weekend crowds can be extreme, with hundreds of thousands of people on the street. This makes wheelchair navigation very difficult. Visit on a weekday morning for a much better experience.

Accessible Toilets

Public restrooms along Istiklal Avenue are limited and often lack wheelchair-accessible stalls. Shopping centers along the avenue (such as Demiroren Shopping Center near Taksim) have more accessible restroom facilities. Fast food restaurants also tend to have accessible toilets.

Tips for Visitors with Disabilities

  • The walk from Taksim to Tunel takes about 20 minutes at a steady pace, longer with stops.
  • Many shops and restaurants along the avenue have a step at the entrance. Newer establishments are more likely to have level access.
  • Street performers, vendors, and cafe tables can narrow the available path. Stay toward the center of the avenue for the smoothest route.
  • The Tunel funicular at the bottom end is one of the oldest underground railways in the world (1875) and is accessible.
  • From Tunel Square, you can continue downhill on side streets to reach the Galata Tower area, though the streets become steep and cobblestoned.
  • Keep belongings secure, as the crowded conditions attract pickpockets.
