Overview

The Princes' Islands (Adalar) are a group of nine islands in the Sea of Marmara, about 90 minutes by ferry from central Istanbul. Buyukada, the largest, is the most visited. Once used as a place of exile for Byzantine princes and Ottoman royals, today the islands are a popular day trip destination known for their car-free streets, Victorian-era wooden mansions, pine forests, and sea views. Horse-drawn carriages were banned in 2020 and replaced with electric vehicles, though a 2024 regulation further restricted battery electric vehicles on the islands. The hilly terrain and limited infrastructure make these islands challenging for wheelchair users.

Getting There

  • Ferry from Kabatas: Sehir Hatlari and private operators run ferries from Kabatas Pier. The ride to Buyukada takes about 90 minutes. Kabatas is served by the T1 tram and F1 funicular.
  • Ferry from Eminonu: Ferries also depart from Eminonu. Check the Sehir Hatlari schedule for departure times.
  • Ferry from Kadikoy (Asian side): Additional departures are available from Kadikoy.

Ferry boarding involves crossing a gangway that may have a gap or step between pier and boat. Staff can assist, but conditions vary. Contact Sehir Hatlari in advance to request assistance. The lower deck of most ferries can accommodate wheelchairs.

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • Ferries have accessible lower decks with seating areas. Upper open-air decks are reached by stairs on most vessels.
  • On Buyukada, the ferry landing area and the main waterfront promenade near the clock tower are relatively flat.
  • Beyond the waterfront, Buyukada has two steep hills. The roads leading inland and uphill are paved but have significant inclines that are very difficult for manual wheelchair users.
  • Sidewalks are narrow or nonexistent on many island roads. The road surface varies from asphalt to cobblestone.
  • There are no public accessible transit options on the islands. Electric vehicle restrictions (2024) limit motorized transport options for visitors.
  • Wheelchair-accessible guided tours are offered by some private tour operators, who can arrange adapted transport and plan flat routes.

The Princes' Islands are beautiful but present real accessibility barriers. The steep hills, uneven roads, and lack of adapted transport make independent wheelchair travel very difficult beyond the flat waterfront area of Buyukada. Consider a private accessible tour if you want to explore more of the island.

Accessible Toilets

Public restrooms are located near the Buyukada ferry terminal. These are basic facilities and may not have designated wheelchair-accessible stalls. Waterfront restaurants and cafes may have more accessible options.

Tips for Visitors with Disabilities

  • If visiting independently, plan to stay near the Buyukada waterfront and ferry terminal area, which is the flattest part of the island.
  • The ferry ride itself is enjoyable, with views of Istanbul's skyline, the Bosphorus, and the Sea of Marmara.
  • Bring sun protection and water, as shade is limited along the waterfront.
  • The round trip takes most of a day (90 minutes each way plus time on the island). Start early.
  • Avoid weekends and holidays, when ferries and the island are extremely crowded.
  • A companion is strongly recommended for assistance with ferry boarding and navigating the island.
