Overview
The Rustem Pasha Mosque (Rustem Pasa Camii) is a 16th-century Ottoman mosque designed by the great architect Mimar Sinan, famous for its extraordinary interior covered almost entirely in handmade Iznik tiles. The geometric and floral tile patterns are among the finest surviving examples of Ottoman decorative art. However, wheelchair users should be aware that this mosque is not accessible. The building sits on a raised platform 6 meters above street level, directly above a row of shops. The only way to reach the prayer hall is by climbing steep, narrow, dark staircases on each side of the building. There is no elevator, ramp, or alternative accessible entrance.
Getting There
- Tram: Eminonu stop (T1 Bagcilar-Kabatas line) is about a 5-minute walk. The mosque is tucked behind the Spice Bazaar, reached through the narrow commercial streets of Hasircilar Caddesi.
- On foot from Sultanahmet: About a 10-minute walk, following the tram line downhill to Eminonu.
This mosque is not wheelchair accessible. The only entrance is through a doorway at street level that leads to steep, narrow, dark staircases. There are no elevators, ramps, or lifts. Wheelchair users cannot reach the prayer hall.
Wheelchair Accessibility
- Not accessible for wheelchair users. The mosque is built on a platform approximately 6 meters above the street, with the ground floor occupied by shops.
- Access to the prayer hall requires climbing enclosed staircases on each of the four sides of the building. These staircases are steep, dark, narrow, and have uneven stone steps.
- Once inside the staircase, there are additional twisting interior flights of steps leading to the courtyard level before entering the mosque.
- There is no elevator, chair lift, or ramp of any kind.
- The surrounding streets (Hasircilar Caddesi and nearby alleys) are narrow, crowded, and have uneven cobblestone surfaces.
If you are a wheelchair user interested in Ottoman tile work, the Suleymaniye Mosque and the Blue Mosque both have notable Iznik tiles and are much more accessible. The Suleymaniye Mosque has ramp access to the courtyard, and the Blue Mosque has a wheelchair entrance ramp.
Accessible Toilets
There are no accessible toilet facilities at or near the Rustem Pasha Mosque. The nearest accessible public restrooms are at the Eminonu waterfront area.
Tips for Visitors with Disabilities
- If you cannot climb stairs but want to appreciate the mosque's architecture, the exterior can be viewed from the street. The facade features some decorative tile panels visible from below.
- Online image galleries and virtual tours provide an excellent way to see the tile interiors.
- Instead, visit the nearby Spice Bazaar (Misir Carsisi), which is at street level and has more accessible entrances. It is directly adjacent to the mosque.
- The Suleymaniye Mosque, a 10-minute taxi ride away, offers comparable Ottoman architectural grandeur with better wheelchair access.
- If traveling with companions who can climb the stairs, allow them 15 to 20 minutes to visit while you explore the Spice Bazaar area.
