Overview

The Spice Bazaar (Misir Carsisi, also called the Egyptian Bazaar) is Istanbul's second-largest covered market, built in 1664 as part of the New Mosque complex. Its L-shaped layout spans about 350 meters with approximately 85 shops selling spices, dried fruits, nuts, Turkish delight, teas, and souvenirs. The main corridor is wide, covered, and relatively flat, making it considerably more wheelchair-friendly than the Grand Bazaar. The market is smaller and easier to navigate, though it still gets crowded during peak tourist hours.

Getting There

  • Tram: Eminonu stop (T1 Bagcilar-Kabatas line) is directly adjacent to the Spice Bazaar. The market entrance is a 1-minute roll from the tram platform.
  • Ferry: Eminonu ferry terminal is across the plaza from the bazaar. Ferries arrive from Kadikoy, Uskudar, and other Asian-side ports.
  • Bus: Many bus routes terminate at Eminonu, which is a major transport hub.

The main entrance facing Eminonu Square (the western gate near the New Mosque) is the most accessible. It has a level threshold and opens directly onto the widest part of the main corridor.

Wheelchair Accessibility

  • The main corridor is wide (approximately 4 to 5 meters) and has a smooth stone floor that is relatively even compared to the Grand Bazaar.
  • The L-shaped layout means you can see most of the market by rolling through one continuous corridor, with a turn in the middle.
  • Both main entrances (west gate near Eminonu Square and east gate near Hasircilar Caddesi) are at street level with no steps.
  • Some shops along the corridor have small raised thresholds, but you can browse most items from the corridor itself, as vendors display goods outside their shop fronts.
  • The surrounding streets and alleys outside the bazaar have uneven cobblestones and can be challenging.
  • No wheelchair rental is available in the bazaar.
  • The market is covered, so it is sheltered from rain and sun.

The Eminonu area outside the bazaar is one of the busiest pedestrian zones in Istanbul. Crowds can be dense around the ferry terminals and the New Mosque. Be prepared for slow progress through the outdoor plaza areas.

Accessible Toilets

Public restrooms are located inside the bazaar near the center of the L-shaped corridor. These are basic facilities and may not have full wheelchair accessibility. The New Mosque (Yeni Cami) across the square has public restrooms as well. For a better option, nearby cafes and restaurants may offer accessible facilities.

Tips for Visitors with Disabilities

  • Visit early morning (before 10:00am) or late afternoon for thinner crowds. Midday is the busiest time.
  • The Spice Bazaar is a more manageable alternative to the Grand Bazaar for wheelchair users. The shorter length and wider corridor make it much easier to navigate.
  • Vendors are happy to let you taste samples of Turkish delight, dried fruits, and teas. Most will bring products out to the corridor for you.
  • The bazaar is a great place to buy lightweight, packable souvenirs like spices and tea.
  • Allow 30 minutes to 1 hour for a leisurely visit.
  • From here, the Galata Bridge is a 3-minute flat roll across Eminonu Square, offering views of the Golden Horn and access to the Karakoy/Beyoglu side.
