Why Connectivity Matters

Reliable internet access is especially important for disabled travelers in Istanbul. You need it to check real-time Metro elevator status, use map apps to find accessible routes, translate Turkish signage, and contact hotels or rental companies. Istanbul has good 4G/5G coverage across the city.

Turkish SIM Cards

Turkey has three main mobile operators:

• Turkcell: The largest network with the widest coverage. Best overall choice for tourists.
• Vodafone Turkey: Good coverage in Istanbul and major cities.
• Turk Telekom: Reliable coverage, sometimes cheaper data packages.

You can buy a tourist SIM card at Istanbul Airport or at carrier shops across the city. You will need your passport to register the SIM. Tourist SIM cards are valid for up to 90 days.

Prices and data amounts change regularly. Check each carrier's website or ask at the airport shop for current offers.

eSIM Options

If your phone supports eSIM, this is the easiest option. You can set up an eSIM before you leave home, so you have internet the moment you land. Popular eSIM providers for Turkey include Airalo, Holafly, and Nomad. These are data-only (no Turkish phone number for calls) but work well for maps, translation apps, and messaging.

IMEI Registration

Turkey requires all mobile phones using a Turkish SIM card to be registered via their IMEI number. However, this rule mainly affects long-term residents. Key points for tourists:

• Stays under 120 days: Your phone will work with a Turkish SIM without IMEI registration. No action needed for most visitors.
• Stays over 120 days: After 120 days, an unregistered phone will be blocked from Turkish mobile networks. Registration requires a residence permit and a fee.
• eSIM users: The same 120-day rule applies, though enforcement can vary.
• Using your home SIM with roaming: IMEI registration does not apply to foreign SIM cards on roaming. You can roam freely without any registration.

WiFi Availability

• Hotels: Nearly all hotels in Istanbul offer free WiFi, including budget properties. Signal strength in rooms varies.
• Cafes and restaurants: Most cafes in tourist areas and modern neighborhoods offer free WiFi. Ask staff for the password.
• Airports: Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gokcen Airport (SAW) both offer free WiFi.
• Metro and tram: Some Metro lines have WiFi, but it is not available across the entire network and can be unreliable.
• Public spaces: Free WiFi is available in some public squares and parks through Istanbul Municipality, but coverage is limited.
