Two Airports

Istanbul is served by two commercial airports on opposite sides of the Bosphorus. Understanding which one your flight uses is essential for planning your trip.

Istanbul Airport (IST) is on the European side, about 40 to 45 kilometers northwest of the city center. Opened in 2019, it is one of the newest and largest airports in the world. It was built with full accessibility as a design priority.

Sabiha Gokcen Airport (SAW) is on the Asian side, about 35 kilometers southeast of Kadikoy. It is older and smaller, primarily used by low-cost carriers like Pegasus Airlines and AJet.

Istanbul Airport (IST) Accessibility

IST is fully accessible throughout. All public areas are step-free with elevators, escalators, and moving walkways connecting every level. The airport features tactile guidance strips, Braille signage at key points, and a video call center offering sign language support.

PRM Assistance at IST

Book PRM (Person with Reduced Mobility) assistance through your airline when purchasing your ticket, or at least 48 hours before departure. Pre-booked assistance typically arrives within 15 minutes. Without a reservation, expect a wait of up to 45 minutes.

Services include a wheelchair with an attendant, check-in and boarding assistance, and a meet-and-greet on arrival. IST also provides the Sunflower Lanyard program for passengers with non-visible disabilities.

Accessible Toilets at IST

Accessible toilets with grab bars, lowered sinks, and adult changing facilities are located throughout the terminal.

Sabiha Gokcen Airport (SAW) Accessibility

SAW provides PRM assistance through your airline. Contact your airline at least 48 hours before departure. For Pegasus Airlines, call PortClinic at +90 216 588 87 80. For AJet, call Airclinic at +90 216 588 22 22.

The terminal has ramps and elevators, accessible restrooms, electric mobility carts, and designated accessible parking. SAW is smaller and easier to navigate than IST, but the facilities are not as modern.

Havaist buses operate 11 routes from IST. Accessible midibuses are available for wheelchair users. Notify Havaist in advance to minimize wait times. When traveling from the city center to the airport, give at least 6 hours advance notice. At the airport, notify staff at least 1 hour before your bus. Tickets can be purchased at Havaist counters, vending machines, or the Havaist app.

Accessible black taxis are available at IST. Register your request at the taxi desk on the arrivals floor. These vehicles accommodate wheelchairs without requiring a transfer.

Getting to the City Center from SAW

Havabus shuttle buses run from SAW to Kadikoy and Taksim. The ride to Kadikoy takes about 40 minutes, and to Taksim about 90 minutes depending on traffic. Wheelchair users who can transfer to a bus seat and fold their wheelchair can use these buses, but there is no guaranteed ramp-equipped service.

Taxis from SAW to Kadikoy cost about 400 to 600 TL (30 to 45 minutes). To Taksim or Sultanahmet, expect 700 to 1000 TL and 60 to 90 minutes.

Our Recommendation

If your flight arrives at IST, the Havaist accessible midibus to Taksim is the best affordable option. Request an accessible vehicle in advance. For guaranteed door-to-door service, book an accessible black taxi at the arrivals desk or arrange a private transfer with a wheelchair-accessible vehicle before your trip.

Traffic Warning

Istanbul traffic is among the worst in Europe. Travel times from both airports can double during rush hours (7:00 to 10:00 AM and 4:00 to 8:00 PM). Allow generous time buffers when heading to the airport for a flight.
