Mostly Accessible

Overview

The Churchill War Rooms are the original underground bunker where Winston Churchill and his war cabinet directed World War II strategy. The site includes the preserved Cabinet War Rooms and the Churchill Museum, which covers his life from childhood to his final years. The museum sits beneath the streets of Westminster, and while most areas are accessible by wheelchair, some sections of the original bunker have narrow corridors that may be tight for larger powered chairs.

Getting There

Westminster station is the closest stop, served by the Jubilee, District, and Circle lines. The station has step-free access via lifts. From the station exit, head toward Parliament Square and turn onto King Charles Street. The museum entrance is at the bottom of the Clive Steps.

The approach to the entrance includes a slope. Staff are available to assist at the top of the steps if needed. There is a separate accessible entrance. Call ahead or ask at the main entrance, and staff will direct you.

Blue Badge parking bays are available on Horse Guards Road, a short distance from the entrance. Spaces are limited, so arriving early is recommended.

Wheelchair Accessibility

A lift provides step-free access from street level to the underground museum. The Churchill Museum section has wide corridors and smooth floors, making it easy to navigate by wheelchair. Interactive displays are set at varying heights, and most are reachable from a seated position.

The original Cabinet War Rooms are a different experience. These are preserved wartime spaces, and some corridors are narrow. Manual wheelchair users can fit through most areas, but larger powered wheelchairs may find a few passages tight. The rooms themselves are viewed through doorways and glass panels, so you can still see the key spaces even if you cannot enter every one.

The museum does not offer wheelchair loans. Bring your own or arrange a rental in advance.

An audio guide is included with admission and works well for visitors with visual impairments. It provides detailed descriptions of each room and display.

Accessible Toilets

Accessible toilets are located near the museum entrance on the underground level. They are a standard accessible size with grab rails and enough space for a wheelchair user plus one carer. There is no Changing Places toilet on site. The nearest one is in the Queen Elizabeth II Centre on Broad Sanctuary, about a five-minute roll away.

Tips for Visitors with Disabilities

One essential companion enters free with proof of disability, such as a UK Access Card or equivalent documentation. Book tickets online in advance, as the museum limits daily visitor numbers.

Weekday mornings tend to be the quietest time to visit. The museum can feel cramped during peak hours, especially in the original war rooms section. Early arrival gives you more space to move through the narrower areas comfortably.

The gift shop is accessible and located near the exit. The nearest accessible cafe is in St James's Park, a short distance away.
