Overview
Hyde Park is one of London's largest and most accessible green spaces. Covering 350 acres in central London, it offers wide paved paths that work well for wheelchair users and people with mobility aids. The flat Serpentine lakeside walk is a highlight, giving you a scenic route with no hills or steps. The Diana Memorial Fountain, Speakers' Corner, and the Serpentine Gallery are all reachable on step-free paths. The park is free to enter and open from early morning until midnight every day.
Getting There
- Tube: Hyde Park Corner (Piccadilly line) has step-free access and puts you at the southeast corner of the park. Marble Arch (Central line) is step-free and gives access from the northeast. Lancaster Gate (Central line) is not step-free.
- Bus: Routes 2, 6, 7, 9, 10, 14, 16, 19, 22, 36, 52, 74, 137, and 148 stop along Park Lane and Bayswater Road on the park's edges.
- Blue Badge parking: Limited spaces along West Carriage Drive and near the Serpentine Gallery. Arrive early on weekends as these fill quickly.
Wheelchair Accessibility
- All main paths are wide, paved, and flat. The central avenue from Hyde Park Corner to the Serpentine is fully surfaced and easy to roll on.
- The Serpentine lakeside path is level and smooth for its full length. It connects to Kensington Gardens to the west.
- The Diana Memorial Fountain has a paved approach and a low surrounding wall. The viewing area is step-free.
- Speakers' Corner at the northeast entrance is on level ground with paved surfaces.
- Some grass areas become soft after rain. Stick to paved paths in wet weather for easier rolling.
The path from Hyde Park Corner to the Serpentine is the smoothest route in the park. For a longer roll, continue west into Kensington Gardens along the same lakeside path.
Accessible Toilets
Accessible toilets are at several locations throughout the park. The main ones are near the Serpentine Bar and Kitchen (mid-park), near the Lido (south side of the Serpentine), and at the Rangers Lodge near Hyde Park Corner. All have grab rails and are kept to a reasonable standard. There is also a Changing Places toilet near the Old Police House, which has a hoist and changing bench.
Tips for Visitors with Disabilities
- No wheelchair loan service is available. Bring your own mobility equipment.
- The park is large. Plan your route before you arrive, focusing on one area per visit if energy is a concern.
- Benches with armrests are placed along most main paths. They make good rest points.
- The Serpentine Bar and Kitchen has level access and space between tables for wheelchair users. It is roughly in the center of the park.
- In summer, the Serpentine Lido area gets crowded. Visit on weekday mornings for a quieter experience.
- Guide dogs are welcome throughout. Water bowls are often available at cafe areas.
